Let's talk grits!

Post by steve-in-kville »

As in the breakfast dish. Seems like people like it and others are super turned off. I started eating it for a quick meal, especially if I want to stay on the semi-healthy side. Sometimes I add fruit and/or cool whip on top.

What is your take on this dish?

I’m a disloyal southerner. Can’t stand the stuff. Or at least I didn’t when I was a child. For all I know I’d like them now

I had never encountered grits until moving to the US. My first reaction was that it was simply the American form of polenta. I like it on occasion but potatoes are the standard starch for me.

I like them in moderation and if plain with a poached egg on top but if they have cheese added then refrigerated and sliced and fried like them that way too- but again in moderation
I am a northerner/Yankee by birth. But live on the Eastern Shore of MD- the culture here is pretty southern with it's own twist.

I had them for supper this evening. I made a bowl topped with sliced up banana and some maple syrup. Normally a give it a heavy serving of cool whip on top but we didn't have any.

And I did poach an egg in the microwave to go with. I was pretty satisfied.

I've done the maple syrup but not the banana and definitely not the cool whip but these days don't eat it at all and that would make them dessert not dinner. Not sure I'm up for grits as dessert. But we all eat differently- not a right or wrong way.

You'll find grits in seafood restaurants in the South, especially snooty ones. Me, I love them with cheese and chili-garlic spice from South Africa. Over there they call grits braaipap [pronounced bry-pop]. A braai is a cookout, and this is a braai staple.

How does grits compare to cornmeal mush? We ate mush at home but not grits..... not sure if I've ever had them?
