It's a family secret.
In 1957, the BBC showed a segment on harvesting spaghetti trees in Switzerland as an April Fool's joke. At that point, the British public was just getting familiar with Italian cuisine and the BBC received inquiries about spaghetti trees.

When I was in JR High, and my second oldest brother was still riding the school bus, he and a friend of his told some of the young kids on the bus that they (my brother's friend's family) ran a spaghetti farm. They told how you had to pull the spaghetti out of the macaroni, then the macaroni was cut into shorter pieces, while the spaghetti was left long.
