JESSE LEE PETERSON / THE FALLEN STATE / Pastor Seymour Helligar Joins Jesse! (Ep. 293) / -59min

Description:
On this week's episode of TheFallenState TV, host Jesse Lee Peterson is joined by Pastor Seymour Helligar—
He the head pastor of Grace Community Church of Long Beach. Pastor Seymour joins Jesse to discuss Christianity, his role as a husband, the "Trinity", black anger, forgiveness, and much more!

Tune in on Friday at 12 Noon Pacific Time / 3:00 PM Eastern Time to catch our premiere!
^^i enjoy JLP’s thought-provoking interviews, this one is especially interesting. Pastor Helligar is one i hope to learn more about.
i’m ever-fascinated by the range of styles and approaches men employ for the one purpose of sharing Truth.
This interview reflects two very different men with different gifts+abilities, equally motivated by Truth.

(i believe) Jesse has a bit of a speech impediment, which makes his work all the more compelling and endearing.
(i believe) his central focus is on his work with young black men in Los Angeles, his home.

i’m encouraged by conservative black leaders committed to correcting sad political errors that have led to so much destruction of God’s plan for families and morality. Theirs is sadly thankless work, but, when one has vision and inspiration, the inward rewards are most important. Who better to lead than men such as these? Thankfully, there are many. Many are needed!

i suppose my fav thing about JLP is how he consistently PROVOKES THOUGHT.
i don’t agree with every word he utters, some things i don’t understand. But he consistently provokes thinking about core scriptural Truths and how to live them IRL. He seems fearless in who he interviews. He seems intent on getting others, often “colorful” others, to think about how they’re living - in God’s eyes.

Provoking thought about God’s plan. He could be doing worse.
No matter topic, he manages to maintain a good temperament. He often says anger is of the devil, that Jesus removes that burden.

This pastor is a very patient man. You can see here the benefits of spiritual education, and the importance of what I will refer to as ‘Biblicism’, being grounded in the Scripture, regarding it as the ultimate authority as to what God has said to us, both through the prophets, and now also through Jesus, and through the Holy Spirit, but all grounded in the Scripture.

You can also see some of the faults of a theological education, the over-development of some Biblical ideas, here especially seen in respect to the doctrine of the Trinity. (In my opinion, that’s where he “gets into a bit of trouble” here.) I may not have heard all he says about this doctrine, either. But when he went elsewhere, I would have gone to John chapter 1. (However, Jesse is hung up on the Red Letters of Jesus, and specifically on his own take on the words of Jesus he has 'cherry picked', so perhaps that would not have been convincing, either.)

(I haven’t listened to the whole thing - yet. I just skipped forward, looking specifically for the part about the doctrine of the Trinity, because it is an area where I feel that theology has run amuck – gone too far, by essentially adding to the Scripture.)

I’ll just say that Jesse exhibits a serious issue that is seen too often in the Black Christian community, the lack of training, and the tendency to form what little Scripture is known around personal perceptions or ideas. (That is, the personal ideas take precedence over the Scripture, and there is no real ability to interpret Scripture accurately, and no willingness to let the Scripture ‘inform’ the personal ideas.) Jesse is not a Biblicist, he is a “spiritualist”. But I do not want to give the impression that I think this problem is in any way limited to the Black church. It is rampant in Southern Folk Christianity as well. (I’m using the term ‘Southern’ in a very broad sense, including the area in which I grew up, Oklahoma. Maybe simply saying “Folk Christianity” would be better.)

I had a very close friend who was a lay pastor in what was then called The Black Evangelical Enterprise. (It is now called Urban Ministries, or something with Urban in the name, but I cannot recall the new name.) It was started through an African-American congregation in south Dallas, lead by Pastor (Doctor) Collins. Their aim was to do pulpit supply for Black congregations as needed, and to lift the pastors out of this Folk Christianity into Biblical Christianity. (The problem, in my mind, is the mixing in of ‘systematic theology’, where the content of Scripture is “systematized” to the point that things left unsaid in Scripture – the remaining mysteries – are filled in with what seems logical to the human mind, things w/o clear Biblical support.)

Thanks, Neto. i appreciate everything you’re saying here, and the effort you made to add insights.

i don’t have your southern experience, nor the experiences of either JLP or Pastor Helligar, but i marvel at how God works in individuals for His Perfect purpose. Jesus came for all, equally, in itself, a wonder. He judges on intent. i can’t fault either man for intent.

the world is fallen and hurting .. whether either speaks in perfection is not the most important thing .. it’s opening doors which may lead to further investigation .. i think both men succeed in that. opening minds+hearts. the Holy Spirit determines outcomes.

JLP puts himself in the trenches. with everything he’s got. he provokes thought about basic Christian tenets that are not only ignored but hated. he tends to speak in absolutes! this opens doors. if you don’t agree, why not?? i sense this is his root goal.

Pastor Helligar is patient, studied, thoughtful.

They are opposites in many ways. God uses them.
Before the internet, i can’t imagine i would have encountered them, or you! Or others on this forum.
How quickly we take things for granted.

I agree that Jesse doesn't just let the "Bible talk" get past scrutiny. And I think that is good. We tend to develop a bushel basket full of "church slang" that doesn't mean much at all to those not in that setting, and, often times not to those insiders, either. These persistent questions help the insider to realize how little he himself understands. As you say, thought provoking. (One of our own pastors seems to be somewhat confused on whether Jesus is the Father or not - I've heard him address Jesus as "Father', or say things like "Jesus is our Father". Of course there is another way to take that, so I'm not judging, but it can create confusion as well.)

[By the way, thanks for putting this up here. I have never heard of either of these men before.]

i think so. i imagine JLP introducing basic concepts to young people who’ve never heard of such things, like, men being responsible leaders in their families; wives being submissive, why+how; to many he meets, these might be outrageous ideas!

just the Christian concepts of submission and obedience have become foreign in the overall culture.
many have no idea what they’re about.

honestly, i expect they’re not always understood by regular church-goers! pride in all matters has become so normalized.

i’ve never been drawn to mega-church types. for a period, i enjoyed watching Charles Stanley (as our family prepared for Sunday church!) - but i’m interested in how “grass roots” pastors interact .. i suppose it strikes me as response to Jesus’ instructions to share the Word. He couldn’t have expected it would be polished and “perfected,” but to share as best we can, in word, actions, works, relying on the Holy Spirit to use those awkward imperfect efforts to serve God’s will. and, hopefully, we continue to learn as we go.

These are times when many leaders, even in big denoms are having trouble with presenting Truth in sermons, i’m encouraged some have the nerve to try. Because Truth is needed for any hope to escape the misery of sin.

We’re a long way away from the days when the Bible was used as communications central for many people, when many used it as their way to learn to read, when passages were used to teach lessons in school curriculum. When courtrooms and law respected the contents.

JLP / Jesse Lee Peterson / Why the Left Loves Martin Luther King, Jr. (Highlight) / 17min

WHY CONSERVATIVES MUST LET GO OF THE ROPE IN THE TUG OF WAR OVER MLK’S LEGACY
https://www.chadojackson.com/post/why-c ... k-s-legacy
.. Martin Luther King Jr. was a pretty-colored trojan horse used by Marxian strategists to supplant the fundamental tradition of black America with a liberal theology and a culture of statism and dependency which is totally at odds with core conservative values. While there are numerous conservative scholars who recognize this fact, they maintain that King was “a good man,” invoking him in their books and speeches as if he is the moral standard in race relations. To do this is to hang on to the fact that at least the trojan horse was painted beautifully.

We as conservatives must come to terms with the fact that the last century is chock-full of strategically concocted and spun movements, events and people; all used to erode the values that made America great at the ground level. For starters, I recommend watching the 1966 documentary, Anarchy USA, to gain insight on a large piece of that history. Beyond that, I challenge conservatives to get back to the basics of what it is they believe, and dare to reject the insinuations, legislation and “heroes” presented to them when those things are at odds with their values.
