Funny. Roger Miller was popular when I was growing up, maybe especially so because he was claimed as an Oklahoman, and I suspect that he often played in near-by Tulsa (probably at the Cain's Ballroom, a popular Western music spot) and I had to look it up, because I remembered the lyrics wrong, as:
"But you could be happy if you were mine too."

I think we've all done our share of misunderstanding words in lyrics or other popular verses. I still remember how children can change hymns and prayers:
"Amazing grapes, how sweet they are...."
