Abide With Me
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide;
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.
Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see—
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.
I need Thy presence every passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness;
Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.
Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies;
Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

Re: Hymn Share
There is a you tube version of this sung by Prairie Praises Hutterite choir - I just love hearing them sing this. It was sung at a Mennonite church in Steinbach, Manitoba.KingdomBuilder wrote:Be Thou My VisionI love this one, but I've yet to hear it sung in any church I've attended.Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
naught be all else to me, save that thou art -
thou my best thought, by day or by night;
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord.
Thou my great Father; thine own may I be,
thou in me dwelling and I one with thee.
Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise;
thou mine inheritance, now and always;
thou and thou only first in my heart,
high King of heaven, my treasure thou art.
High King of heaven, my victory won,
may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

I really love that one, too. We sing it occasionally at Elmendorf.KingdomBuilder wrote:Be Thou My Vision

Here's another favorite of mine, also with a strong Celtic flavor-

Canticle of the Turning
Ancient words set to old folk music- does it get any better than that?My soul cries out with a joyful shout
that the God of my heart is great,
And my spirit sings of the wondrous things
that you bring to the one who waits.
You fixed your sight on the servant's plight,
and my weakness you did not spurn,
So from east to west shall my name be blest.
Could the world be about to turn?
Refrain:
My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears,
For the dawn draws near,
And the world is about to turn.
Though I am small, my God, my all,
you work great things in me.
And your mercy will last from the depths of the past
to the end of the age to be.
Your very name puts the proud to shame,
and those who would for you yearn,
You will show your might, put the strong to flight,
for the world is about to turn.
Refrain
From the halls of power to the fortress tower,
not a stone will be left on stone.
Let the king beware for your justice tears
every tyrant from his throne.
The hungry poor shall weep no more,
for the food they can never earn;
These are tables spread, ev'ry mouth be fed,
for the world is about to turn.
Refrain
Though the nations rage from age to age,
we remember who holds us fast:
God's mercy must deliver us
from the conqueror's crushing grasp.
This saving word that our forbears heard
is the promise that holds us bound,
'Til the spear and rod be crushed by God,
who is turning the world around.
Refrain

O Savior, Bless Us
O Savior, bless us ere we go
Thy word into our minds instill
And make our lukewarm hearts to glow
With lowly love and fervent will.
Through life's long day, and death's dark night,
O gentle Savior, be our light.
Grant us, dear Lord, from evil ways
Thy sweet forgiveness and release
And bless us more than in past days
With purity and inward peace.
Do more than pardon - give us joy,
Sweet fear and sober liberty
And loving hearts in Thy employ
That only long to be like Thee.
Through life's long day, and death's dark night,
O gentle Savior, be our light.
O Savior, bless us ere we go
Thy word into our minds instill
And make our lukewarm hearts to glow
With lowly love and fervent will.

Re: Hymn Share
A timely one considering all of the meteorological circumstance..
TILL THE STORM PASSES BY
In the dark of the midnight have I oft hid my face,
While the storm howls above me, and there's no hiding place.
'Mid the crash of the thunder, Precious Lord, hear my cry,
Keep me safe till the storm passes by.
[Chorus]: Till the storm passes over, till the thunder sounds no more,
Till the clouds roll forever from the sky;
Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand,
Keep me safe till the storm passes by.
Many times Satan whispered, "There is no need to try,
For there's no end of sorrow, there's no hope by and by"
But I know Thou art with me, and tomorrow I'll rise
Where the storms never darken the skies.
[Chorus]
When the long night has ended and the storms come no more,
Let me stand in Thy presence on the bright peaceful shore;
In that land where the tempest, never comes, Lord, may I
Dwell with Thee when the storm passes by.

Thanks, that brings back some fond memories. This was a solo I sang in younger years. Went through some pretty stormy years and wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for being held in the hollow of His hand. To God be the glory !KingdomBuilder wrote:A timely one considering all of the meteorological circumstance..

Let the Lower Lights Be Burning by Philip P. Bliss
Remember the sinking souls around us each day. If the Church doesn't, who will?
A capella recording:
& an exceptional Non-a capella recording:
A beautiful hymn on the responsibility we've all been tasked to bear.Brightly beams our Father’s mercy,
From His lighthouse evermore,
But to us He gives the keeping
Of the lights along the shore.
Refrain:
Let the lower lights be burning!
Send a gleam across the wave!
Some poor fainting, struggling seaman
You may rescue, you may save.
Dark the night of sin has settled,
Loud the angry billows roar;
Eager eyes are watching, longing,
For the lights along the shore.
Refrain
Trim your feeble lamp, my brother;
Some poor sailor, tempest-tossed,
Trying now to make the harbor,
In the darkness may be lost.
Remember the sinking souls around us each day. If the Church doesn't, who will?

Come,Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy
This is an old hymn I've really come to enjoy. Is this one sung in CA circles, too?
An awfully-close-to-acapella recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHk1_-_kmCECome, ye sinners, poor and needy,
Weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity, love and pow’r.
Refrain:
I will arise and go to Jesus,
He will embrace me in His arms;
In the arms of my dear Savior,
Oh, there are ten thousand charms.
Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome,
God’s free bounty glorify;
True belief and true repentance,
Every grace that brings you nigh.
Refrain
Come, ye weary, heavy-laden,
Lost and ruined by the fall;
If you tarry till you’re better,
You will never come at all.
Refrain
Let not conscience make you linger,
Not of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness He requireth
Is to feel your need of Him.
Refrain

I think it is included in the Brethren hymnal. I don't remember ever singing it in any Mennonite churches.KingdomBuilder wrote:Come,Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy

Re: Hymn Share
A song with the same title and opening line is in the Church and Sunday School Hymnal, with a different tune and mostly different words. The Church Hymnal (#529) has another tune and set of words. Hymns of the Church (#729) has yet another tune; the words are similar to the CSSH but not entirely the same. The words are invariably attributed to Joseph Hart; I wonder which are actually original.
Like Ken, I haven't heard any of these variants sung in a Mennonite church.
