Our MB Hymns to share. Quite different than perhaps many other Anabaptist churches.

On a CD called Home by the Esches:

> Friend, did you ever have a lonely battle,
> A fight that only you can feel and hear,
> A fight that only you alone were fighting,
> And then you seemed to see the Savior dear.
>
> Fight on, my brother, fight on,
> There's victory awaiting for you;
> If your faith is fixed upon the Savior,
> With Him, you'll fight the battle through.
>
> At night, at times I wake and watch and worry,
> I toss and turn and wonder who can care,
> And then I turn my eyes upon the Savior,
> And find that thro' my tears He Hears my prayer.
>
> Fight on, my brother, fight on,
> There's victory awaiting for you;
> If your faith is fixed upon the Savior,
> With Him, you'll fight the battle through.
>
> I find there's vict'ry in the blood of Jesus;
> It's just a matter how we live for Him;
> He's nearer than the things that are about us,
> He knows and sends the vict'ry once again.
>
> Fight on, my brother, fight on,
> There's victory awaiting for you;
> If your faith is fixed upon the Savior,
> With Him, you'll fight the battle through.

Wayfarin' Stranger

I’m just a poor wayfaring stranger,
I’m trav’ling through this world of woe;
There is no sickness, toil, nor danger,
In that bright world to which I go.
I’m going there to see my father,
I’m going there no more to roam;
I’m just a going over Jordan,
I’m just a going over home.

I know dark clouds will gather o’er me,
I know my pathway’s rough and steep;
But golden fields lie out before me,
Where weary eyes no more shall weep.
I’m going there to see my mother,
She said she’d meet me when I come;
I’m just a going over Jordan,
I’m just a going over home.

I want to sing salvations story,
In concert with the blood-washed band;
I want to wear a crown of glory,
When I get home to that good land.
I’m going there to see my brothers,
They passed before me one by one;
I’m just a going over Jordan,
I’m just a going over home.

I’ll soon be free from every trial,
This form will rest beneath the sod;
I’ll drop the cross of self-denial,
And enter in my home with God.
I’m going there to see my Saviour,
Who shed for me His precious blood;
I’m just a going over Jordan,
I’m just a going over home

One of those hymns that just makes my spirit soar

The City of Light
There’s a city of light ’mid the stars, we are told,
Where they know not a sorrow or care;
And the gates are of pearl, and the streets are of gold,
And the building exceedingly fair.

Refrain:
Let us pray for each other, nor faint by the way,
In this sad world of sorrow and care,
For that home is so bright, and is almost in sight,
And I trust in my heart you’ll go there.

Brother dear, never fear, we shall triumph at last,
If we trust in the word He has giv’n;
When our trials and toils, and our weepings are past,
We shall meet in that home up in heav’n.

Refrain

Sister dear, never fear, for the Savior is near,
With His hand He will lead you along;
And the way that is dark Christ will graciously clear,
And your mourning shall turn to a song.

Refrain

Let us walk in the light of the gospel divine;
Let us ever keep near to the cross;
Let us love, watch, and pray, in our pilgrimage here;
Let us count all things else but as loss.

We metrical hymnbook types use this tune a fair bit for the hymns "Oh How Happy Are They" and "O Thou In Whose Presence My Soul Takes Delight."

Hail the blest morn, see the great Mediator,
Down from the regions of glory descend!
Shepherds, go worship the babe in the manger,
Lo, for his guard the bright angels attend.

Cold on his cradle the dewdrops are shining;
Low lies his bed with the beasts of the stall;
Angels adore him, in slumbers reclining,
Wise men and shepherds before him do fall.

Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion,
Odors of Eden and offerings divine?
Gems from the mountain, and pearls from the ocean,
Myrrh from the forest, and gold from the mine?

Vainly we offer each ample oblation;
Vainly with gold we his favor secure;
Richer by far is the heart's adoration;
Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

Low at his feet we in humble prostration,
Lose all our sorrow and trouble and strife;
There we receive his divine consolation,
Flowing afresh from the fountain of life.

He is our friend in the midst of temptation,
Faithful supporter, whose love cannot fail;
Rock of our refuge, and hope of salvation,
Light to direct us through death's gloomy vale.

Star of the morning, thy brightness, declining,
Shortly must fade when the sun doth arise:
Beaming refulgent, his glory eternal
Shines on the children of love in the skies.

-one of the many variations of "Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning" by Reginald Heber. This version is from Southern Harmony, a portion of which wound up in our little metrical hymnbook back in the late 1800s. We still use it every Christmas and often in between.

I LOVE that hymn, we sing it every Christmas in Kentucky when I visit my mother there, sometimes singing it from Southern Harmony, sometimes just singing the melody.

Is it biblical? Is it Christlike? Is it loving? Is it true? How can I find out?

Do y'all use the Shepherd's Hymn tune in the Southern Harmony, or the standard minor tune, or yet another? We have four tunes at least, that I'm aware of...
