i’ve wanted to share my wedding dress with my granddaughter. when i went to look for it last winter, it was nowhere to be found. how could this be? maybe i gave it to my daughter? we talked about it at different times. no.
i feared i’d thrown it out in my most recent move. how could i?? very sad.
i found it this morning, searching for something else. happy to be reunited.
it’s a simple dress, i made it myself. i adapted an everyday pattern to use ivory fabric, with a little pale robin’s egg blue accent. i made my husband’s shirt, another shade of blue, not identical.
esp considering the crazy styles at the time, we did pretty well.
i’m looking forward to playing dress-up with our granddaughter.
now 13, i can just see her “dancing around” in it, as only young girls can do.

Alphonsus, son of Roger Kirk and Elizabeth Duck of Lurgan, County Louth, Ireland came to America in 1689, then settled in New Castle Co. Centre Twp., near Brandywine Creek. He was married to Abibail Sharpley of Shilpot Creek having been born in Ireland also,on the 23'rd day of 12'th month, (that is not Dec), 1692 at Brandywine Hundred, New Castle. They were married at her parents home.
They settled on a farm a half mile from Centre Meeting House, where they would reside the rest of their lives.
They were some of the early settlers of Delaware.
He had become a Quaker or Society of Friends before emigrating to the colonies as an unmarried man.
per the following parental release "we are willing our son Alphonsus should take this journey, and if it be his portion to marry we do give our consent, provided it be to a Friend, and in unity with Friends, according to the order of the Truth".
It is reported that he set ashore in Jamestown, but settled in Delaware, then part of PA. First he and his wife were members of Newark Meeting house, but later he and his wife helped establish Centre Meeting house nearer their home.

i was not told of Quaker or Mennonite or Catholicism in my family history. i’ve found all, and more.
i was told we were NOT of Irish descent! i’ve found Ireland, too. and more.
how i wish my elders were here to share these findings.

After posting this, i remembered a passage ohio jones once quoted, now years ago, in reference to a member who had been blocked from MD, but persisted in attempts to join under new identities. He was clever, but some members were onto him, not allowing his creative trickery to prevail. it was interesting to witness. i was not more clever than he.

well. i took the dress with me on my recent visit.
my granddaughter, 13, happily tried it on! her mother and i were astonished.
it fit as tho it were made for her! how can this be??!
i’m glad i did not wait any longer. my daughter is a bit taller than me, my grdaughter seems predetermined to be taller, still!
i left the dress with her. a dream come true. to see my daughter, then granddaughter in that nostalgic dress.
i would love to include a pic. i guess that’s unwise on the internet.

This evening, i got a “glimmer of hope” for a terrible burden that has seemed impossible (for several years).
It’s not over, it’s not easy. But maybe one baby step has been accomplished.
Praying for patience to wait for God’s will and timing may be my most common prayer. It sure feels like it much of the time.
