GRAND MINIMUM

One particularly cool period in the 17th Century guided their research.

An intense cold snap between 1645 and 1715 has been dubbed the “Maunder Minimum”.

In England, the Thames river froze over. The Baltic Sea was covered in ice — so much so that the Swedish army was able to march across it to invade Denmark in 1658.

But the cooling was not uniform: Distorted weather patterns warmed up Alaska and Greenland.

These records were combined with 20 years of data collected by the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite mission, as well as observations of nearby stars similar to the Sun.
Perhaps the current changes will help mitigate this upcoming Maunder Minimum? An extended Minimum can wreak havoc on food supplies thus making us vulnerable to disease.

God is in control.

Can Climate Models Predict Climate Change?
Will Happer / Princeton, for PragerU
https://www.prageru.com/videos/can-clim ... ate-change

“Predicting climate temperatures isn't science – it's science fiction.
Emeritus Professor of Physics at Princeton University Will Happer explains.”
i enjoy these neat little video presentations, but, i would like a transcript to read. they cover so many points. (i need to write notes as i view/listen!)

above, when he uses the words, “science fiction,” i suppose he could have used the newly popular word, “scientism,” or other (?) he was making a point.

i understand him to be describing an important division between scientists, those who believe in and rely on models, and those who do not (?) Wayne describes what science is (i try to learn.)

this video caught my attention because of this thread, also, because a friend had just shared this description of scientific models. (to paraphrase:)
.. “(some) scientists use MODELS.

A model is not the real thing.

So you can set up a model, run experiments, be peer-reviewed, but that does not address the problem of reliance on a MODEL in the first place” ..
he goes on to say, debates between these two approaches can become intense.

an aside.
my granddaughter loves reading, loves science, nature; mechanical things attract her like a bee to honey. she loves learning about God’s creations and His infinite wisdom.

i must find out more about a (resource) she’s allowed to view. it strikes me as a sort of PragerU for children. it’s pretty good. children choose topics of their interest, then view. (one day, she chose diabetes! i have diabetes. honestly, it compared with material i’ve been given on it, as an adult!) ..

she was viewing one day, i heard the talk end with (something like) ..
“scientific theories are so well researched and studied, believe them, they are fact.” :?

without her present, i would like to view it again.

i do not agree that is a definitive message that should be given children/young people.
without question, i see a lot of grooming of children to simply accept lots of things as fact, that are not fact, at all; highly politicized, without notice that there are more views to consider.

many teachers seem to be oblivious regarding “other views.”
teaching critical thinking appears to have “gone the way of the ironing board.”

no one can teach what they do not know. :-|

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Hollywood star Robert De Niro took aim at the Trump administration's stance on climate change, telling a packed audience in the Middle East that he was visiting from a "backward" country suffering from "temporary insanity."

He said that in the country he's describing, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency suggested last week that global warming may be a good thing for humanity.

"I am talking about my own country, the United States of America. We don't' like to say we are a 'backward' country so let's just say we're suffering from a case of temporary insanity," he added.

De Niro received applause and laughs when he said the U.S. "will eventually cure itself by voting our dangerous leader" out of office. He spoke Sunday at Dubai's World Government Summit.
Now if De Niro would take a stance about the abuse going on in Hollywood, maybe I would not laugh at this.

Hollywood, clean your own toxic atmosphere before you worry about things outside of Hollywood.

No kidding Robert. If anyone isn’t qualified to comment on science and climate, it’s Hollywood figures. Politicians have more credibility.

o.the.irony. it’s so blatant, it’s beyond measure.
hollywood has been, for many decades, the cause of widespread disrespect/hatred of the U.S. around the world, for its open amorality-immorality. much of what western culture considers “normal” in word and action, would be considered pornography elsewhere.

our youthful, youth-adoring, U.S. is an experiment that may not survive. there were never any guarantees, not from the start! understand, the founding fathers actually studied history, attempted to avoid obvious pitfalls. still, they knew: no guarantees. they created a basic structure, knowing its longevity would depend 100% on the willingness of future citizens to respect it.

honestly, i do not see any comparison in the commitment to forethought these original men had with today’s elected: those who sign bills without so much as reading! “we will pass the bill to find out what’s in it,” etc.

any child could sign a document without reading.
this is blatant dereliction of duty. however, it’s become SOP. sad as that is.

a youthful error made in the U.S. has been to allow entertainers to become wealthy, influential “idols.” big mistake.

throughout history, even in U.S. history, not long ago, entertainers were considered to be the dregs of society. no decent, self-respecting family would allow their children to choose this path, no socializing, no intermarrying, no! it was a big deal.

for those that pursued this life, debauchery of all descriptions was to be expected.
there are exceptions. speaking in generalizations.

now, folks are horrified at hollywood debauchery?! ay-ya-ya. not everyone is shocked.

every long-lived culture (i know of, fwiw) honors their elders.
idolizing youth is - just another false god.

U.S.-bashing has been a widespread indulgence/hobby that’s been around for decades.
even in the U.S. it’s considered to be “quite continental,” a popular part of elitist thinking.
“tsk, tsk. we’re so evolved.” .. nonsense.

however, the U.S. is also regularly called on for humanitarian support in crisis, private citizens are known to be generous and giving.

so, i have long-thought there’s a special love-hate thing regarding the U.S.
what a comfortable personal indulgence to know one can bash a country on one hand, expect serious aid and support on the other. i’ve witnessed this happening IN the U.S., and known of it from foreign countries, for so many years, i do not expect to see any change.

people change when they are motivated to change. typically, by pain.
as long as they’re comfortable, getting everything they want: change is unlikely.

most in the U.S. just ignore the bashing, harbor no grudges, show up when needed.
thank our dear Lord.

UK blizzards - a light-hearted video
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/vid ... tain-video

it’s strange to see blizzard conditions in Scotland, Wales, Ireland, England ..
cold coming from all across Europe has created the conditions.

some reports are citing, “not since 1990-ish” ..

In just 15 years, the U.S. will be producing unlimited amounts of nearly free, completely green energy. Not only would such an energy holy grail mean the end of humanity’s dependence on expensive fossil fuels, it would also be a panacea for climate change.

I would really love it if fusion works out. There's a great article on this in Nature. I remember stories like this several decades ago that didn't pan out, but you really can't know for sure in advance, that's why they call it research.

Would you support government funding for some of this research?
“This funding for MIT is terrific, but there’s just no way you are going to get the private sector to take on the full brunt of the fusion programme,” Prager says.
Different Prager. Not Dennis.
For their part, MIT researchers hope that their work will generate more government interest in fusion research. “If we can change that narrative, we can potentially reinvigorate the rest of the programme,” Greenwald says.
