for most of my life, most of my friends never, or only occasionally, discussed politics.

yes. young people are generally pushed to be political now, esp "activism." it's a thing.
moreso than in the past. esp pushing them to rigidly choose sides, before they know what sides are.

it seems to be something brought out of mothballs from the 60's-70's, reinvented now as a way of life, not event-specific.

no event?! - no problem. just make one up, throw it out on social media. :-|
