Well, they continued to make the Bug long after Nader drowned the Corvair. There were easier ways of fixing that issue than stopping making them, but Nader was on a mission and I'm not sure he was right. It gets harder to hug trees when they have been burnt down, and then there is no funding to replant them right away like the foresters do these days.

My family has been in the logging industry for over a hundred years in the area where I live. My grandfather even did some horse logging and then was a bush foreman where he spent many hours in the bush, including hours in helicopters surveying timber. He couldn't disagree with you more about the amount of forest around here now compared to when he was younger. He tells me forest fires consumed so much more timber than what we allow it to today with fighting forest fires is one factor. He is 83 and still goes out in the bush nearly everyday.
But besides that Canada's logging for the most part takes place on crown land where it is regulated and more trees are planted every year than logged. But I think this is different in the US...?

I realized I may have misunderstood your previous post...

I work for a company that has a number of sawmills in the US and Canada and at the last quarterly review the GM explained that the wood coming into the US mills is from private land... Maybe there is more to that than I know...?

i’d forgotten about this thread.
forgotten it had so many posts!
my memory.

Yesterday ..
sunny, cold day. had a 4pm appt in town.
at 3pm, went to warm up car. i try to leave 45-60 min for driving.

all was calm.
esp my car, which would not start. it was silent.

soo. hmm.
looked around, neighbors probably at work.
called auto shop. was told to wiggle the cables, if it started, bring it in. ok.
i wiggled cables. no change.

house under construction down the road, not far.
workers seemed to be readying to end their day.
i walked over, asked if anyone might know about batteries, have time to look?
one stepped up.

he brought his truck over, jump-started without much difficulty.
he advised driving, to charge up the battery.

he refused payment. he works for a well drilling company.
i told him i would call his company to let them know how grateful i am. he smiled.

now the question:
drive to shop?
drive to appointment, hope for the best?

i drove to the appointment, parked backward, in case of needed help. the lot was not crowded.
got my business done.

nope. no starting it.

i called my shop, now close to closing time.
they said to have it towed in, they would fix it the next day.
which was fine.

but, it’s getting dark. how do i get home? how do i get to the shop the next day? hmm. hmm.

called my OP son, to see if he had any ideas.

i happened to buy AAA Road Service this year, and, my home insurance reimburses some for tows.
so, i knew i had those options.

while calling, i remembered reading!!! -
AAA has a battery replacement service with membership.

ok. this worked out. i was home before 9pm. tired.
but, no other problems trying to figure out how to get home, to the shop, etc.
the battery cost the same as it would have from my regular shop. i prefer to have them do all the work. but, getting home saved time+added expense, possible inconvenience of others.

i believe my old battery would have been 8 years in January 2019!
i told my son, i believe i squeezed every bit of life out of it. it out-performed itself.

same quality? warranties?

in 2011, i paid $70 for the Sears battery.
yesterday, i paid $145, i believe for similar.

i’m not expecting the quality to be as good.
in general, i expect to pay more for lower quality these days.

Thanks Max, I have many tools that were made in the USA and there are many of them on my Goofy Cart build. I wish I could post some pictures of it or even a short video, but without my photobucket account anymore I am not sure how to do it.[img][video][/video]
