My parents’ mortgage on their home in the U.S. was north of current rates back when we were growing up in the 90s.
Australia was even worse. They don’t have fixed rates there so the mortgage bill would change… every month. (Actually, every week since you pay weekly there.) This was in the 80s when the Aussie dollar had just crashed.
The real problem now is that prices are so high.

Many Americans have exhausted their savings - - and are now deep in the hole trying to cover the cost of living.
It’s as tho thieves have pirated everyone’s bank accounts, with no gate keepers to interfere.
“Open borders” to everyone’s finances.
