Re: Hymn Share

Recently I came across a choice evening hymn by Gerhard Tersteegen:
The evening comes, the sun is sunk and gone,
And all things lie in stillness and in rest.
And thou my soul, for thee one rest alone
Remaineth ever on the Father’s breast.

The wanderer now rests each weary limb;
Birds to their nests return from heath and hill;
The sheep are gath’red from the pastures dim:
In Thee, my God, my restless heart is still.

Lord, gather from the regions dim and far
Desires and thoughts that wandered far from Thee;
To home and rest lead on, O guiding Star
No other home or nest but God for me.

The daily toil of this worn body done,
The spirit for untiring work is strong;
Still hours of worship and of love begun,
Of blessed vision and eternal song.

In darkness and in silence still and sweet,
With blessed awe my spirit feels Thee near,
Within the Holiest, worships at Thy feet:
Speak Thou and silence all my soul to hear.

To Thee my heart as incense shall arise;
Consum’d upon Thine altar all my will.
Love, praise, and peace, an evening sacrifice,
And in the Lord I rest and I am still.
Recently I put up a website for my musical pursuits.
I have music scores for this text here:
The Evening Comes

“Don’t Forget To Pray” number 70 in the Life Songs No. 2.
Aka “Did You Think To Pray”

The phrase in the first verse, “Did you sue for loving favor” always strikes my Mennonite faith as quite a bold thing to do. Sue? We don’t sue. Sue God? Borderline heresy. However, maybe we could stand to take a bit more assertive or bold in claiming “loving favor as a shield”.
Anyway, I kinda like that phrase.

The second verse speaks again of “claiming” the Holy Spirit. The third verse has pleading for grace. And I like the way the writer used “Balm of Gilead did you borrow” in verse four.

Pray in the morning, pray in temptation, pray when your angry, pray when in trials, pray when in sorrow. Which reminds me of the chorus of the song “Pray All The Time” and the first verse of “Whisper A Prayer In The Morning”.

1.
Ere you left your room this morning,
Did you think to pray?
In the name of Christ our Savior,
Did you sue for loving favor,
As a shield today?

2.
When you met with great temptation,
Did you think to pray?
By His dying love and merit,
Did you claim the Holy Spirit
As your guide and stay?

3.
When your heart was filled with anger,
Did you think to pray?
Did you plead for grace, my brother,
That you might forgive another
Who had crossed your way?

4.
When sore trials came upon you,
Did you think to pray?
When your soul was bowed in sorrow,
Balm of Gilead did you borrow
At the gates of day?

Refrain:
Oh, how praying rests the weary!
Prayer will change the night to day;
So when life seems dark and dreary,
Don’t forget to pray.

I notice that this https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/mus ... y?lang=eng copy of the song only has three verses, while the Life Songs Hymnal has four verses.

Here are some good thoughts and history of this song and it’s verses:

Hymn: “Pray All The Time”.

Verse one sounds a bit grim and sort of grabs you. The world has lost the right to pray and saints have failed to pray.
Chorus is what I what I was reminded of in the previous post.

1.
The world has lost the right of prayer,
And saints have failed to pray;
What loss sustained beyond repair!
How blind of heart are they!

2.
The Father speaketh in His word–
He talks no other way!
And to converse with Him, our Lord,
We must take time to pray.

3.
There is no trial, grief, or pain,
No moment of the day,
But that we may in Jesus’ name
Incline our souls and pray!

CHORUS:
Pray in the Morning, Pray at the Noontime,
Pray in the Evening, Pray any time;
Pray when you’re happy, Pray when in sorrow,
Pray when you’re tempted, Pray all the time.

This link talks about this song and has an acapella singing of it that you can play:

“Whisper A Prayer In The Morning”

1.
Whisper a prayer in the morning,
Whisper a prayer at noon,
Whisper a prayer in the evening,
To keep your heart in tune.

2.
God answers prayer in the morning,
God answers prayer at noon.
God answers prayer in the evening,
So keep your heart in tune.

3.
Jesus may come in the morning,
Jesus may come at noon,
Jesus may come in the evening,
So keep your heart in tune.

With all this Covid and all the fearmongering that goes on regarding pandemics, I heard an old hymn that my current on-line Salvation Army pastor sang the other day and it reminded me of the wonderful peace we can in our hearts during this time. It also reminded me of a Pentecostal brother I now deliver meals to at his home who sang this with his guitar back some 60 years ago in the little Pentecostal church I was raised in.

The lines that especially stand out to me are -

I don't worry o'er the future,
For I know what Jesus said,
And today I'll walk beside Him,
For He knows what is ahead.

Since some here appreciate acapella singing I found this version of this song. May it be a blessing to y'all.

We learned a new hymn in church today, Be a Sower, number 789 in Voices Together, the new hymnal from MennoMedia. It's a camp song, so pretty simple, but I like the lyrics.

Be a Sower

1 Be a sower, plant a seed, let it
grow into a tree. Give it water, watch it
grow, and give it the love that it needs.

2 Be a list’ner; listen close when you
find a friend in need. Talk to Jesus; Jesus
knows, and he’ll give you comfort and peace.

3 Be a dreamer; work for peace— turn your
sword into a plow. With our neighbors, we will
seek to make change as God shows us how.

Refrain:
Be humble, and gentle, and always keep looking for peace.
God makes the sun rise on the good and the evil,
rain fall on the rocks and the weeds. Let’s be loving
to one another. Join in God’s circle of peace.
