Christmas Carols - Your Favorite?

[steve-in-kville]

Here's the concert in Phoenix version. Like I mentioned, a little "edgier."

Great text...probably not my favorite but one of them.

Made me laugh.

Another one is "Angels We Have Heard on High"
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o'er the plains
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be?
Which inspire your heavenly songs?
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Gloria in excelsis Deo!

See Him in a manger laid
Whom the choirs of angels praise;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
While our heart in love we raise.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Not my favorite carol necessarily, but one of the nicest versions of the carol Do You Hear What I Hear, by Cantus.

Made me laugh.

When our daughter was 2, her bedroom was next to and close to our neighbor’s driveway, his young adult son drove a motorcycle, he loved revving the engine at every opportunity .. nap times were disastrous.

Really enjoyed listening to O Holy Night done here.

Apparently the Civil War-era union army marching song "Battle Hymn of the Republic" has been converted by the French into a French Christmas Carol popular in Quebec and France. Here is a Slate Magazine article talking about it: https://slate.com/culture/2022/12/battl ... story.html

Here is French-Canadian singer Celine Dion singing the French Christmas carol version of the song which they title "Glory Alleluia" in case you are curious what "Battle Hymn of the Republic" sounds like as a Christmas carol.

[barnhart]

That battle hymn of the republic has nine lives, something about it seems to grab people. Mark Twain rewrote it as a critique of US imperialism. Google it. Worth a read.
