Too funny! Sounds just like the Texans I know: show up and bring beer even if it's to volunteer. They have their own sense of identity, God bless them!Robert wrote:

What many in the main culture do not fully understand is how much people can do without big money. I am sure there will be FEMA and state moneys to help. Many will not have insurance. I heard 1 in 5 had flood insurance in the area.Robert wrote:
Absolutely! And actually, I don't think that's just Texans. I see a whole lot of that in North Carolina and the other places I have lived in the United States. The helpfulness of Americans is one of the things I really appreciate about this culture.Robert wrote:What many in the main culture do not fully understand is how much people can do without big money. While Texas is a little bit of a rogue state, they do take care of their own. They will do what it takes to rebuild and they will have many other Texan hands to make sure it is done.
Especially for the people who come out to help. This kind of thing is a great way to unite people, and a chance to help volunteer with others who may not look like you.Robert wrote:There is always some who will fall through the cracks, but over all, they will care for each other as many of the pictures have shown. When a crisis hits, race, religion, or gender identity means nothing. Texans will help no matter who needs it.
I agree with this conclusion, and I think the concept is broader than just disaster response.William Carwile, former FEMA associate administrator wrote:That is probably the biggest change in recent years - the realization that disaster response is not just a government response, it is a societal response. The federal government has a role, and so does everyone else.
