So far, the Catholic Church is all she knows.
She is thriving there, it’s her church home.

“Quakers” may be an unusual place to begin to learn about Christian history, but, outside Catholicism, this is probably her starting point. We have talked about Jesus being in a Jewish family, how there were no Christians before Jesus! - There is a strong Jewish presence in this area, we drive by a Jewish synagogue. She has questions. :)

i’m happy with her learning in slow stages. i hope it establishes a good foundation for her future.
most of all, her interest drives her questions. depending on the depth of her interest, as you know, there is so much possible to be learned. more than a lifetime’s study.

i do believe the Holy Spirit guides+protects (esp children) according to God’s will.

there are distinctions between Anabaptists and Quakers. from my small understanding, possibly the biggest commonality is being CO. possibly this is why they are often grouped together?

truthfully, for those who know nothing of Christians, they lump all together, Catholics, Protestants, Anabaptists, presuming this is one organized group. this one presumption reveals they know nothing of Christianity, definitely not one cohesive organized group!

i found reading about the first Quakers very interesting.
i probably would not be interested in today’s (liberal?) Quakers, who seem to be more of a political activism group than anything else. (i hope my understanding is wrong.)

Bill Rushby has not posted for awhile.
‘been wondering about him. :)

Our seven year old daughter says to our four year old son, "Let's go climb the walls!"
I walk around the corner of the hallway a bit later and her feet are pressed against opposite walls about five feet off the floor with smiling head touching against the ceiling.

we had one like that.
i turned around from the kitchen sink one day, s-m-a-l-l kitchen, to see our daughter (4?) -
in the doorway, and UP the doorway, looking down at the world from the top!
she was more than happy to teach her younger brother when he came along.

she was also the one, about (4?) who was playing on the floor near me as i sat at the kitchen table paying bills, who excitedly announced, “peanut bugs!” .. i looked to find a June bug there beside her.
they do look like peanuts.

This is a different situation.
i hope i can describe it well enough not to begin ill will.

Early in this year’s family visit, maybe August, i took my grdaughter+one of her friends for a hamburger.
There was a television on, with CNN “news.” Neither girl is accustomed to TV, so, they silently stared. My back was turned to the TV, not interested in TV.

Very soon, the girls became animated, jumping up+down, laughing+chanting, ridiculing, President Trump. (Not using, “President.”) i was taken back. Where is this coming from?! They are in 5th grade, public school, quite a wealthy location.

i quietly asked my granddaughter if she knew President Trump? “No.”
Is it ok to bully people you don’t know? “No.”
Is it ok to speak meanly about people you don’t know? “No.”
Have you listened to him, or heard his POV? “No.”
hmm.

My grdaughter has been frustrated from time-to-time, when teachers have not listened to her, when they decided another child “was right,” even when lying was involved.
i reminded her of this, she agreed, she did not like to be treated this way, at all.

i let the girls know, in the U.S., we have a President and Vice President.

We discussed this, now+then, over a few days.
on a prior visit, we went to a fav local bookstore, i asked if they had any children’s books on President Trump? i wanted to view. “No.” .. (but, the store offered several books on obama, even on hillary) ..
the clerk offered to look for something to order, i said, ok .. she found NOTHING. :?
i know books exist. she offered to search further, if i could provide a specific title.
T-R-U-M-P. :? :?:

After this recent incident, i ordered one of several children’s books on President Trump, on Amazon, not at the local bookstore. i was not sure what it would be.

When i asked my granddaughter if she knew who VP Pence is? “No.” Never heard of him.
i ordered the children’s book VP Pence’s daughter wrote, her mother did the artwork.

Month’s ago, i read about Pence’s children’s book, but, as quickly as it was available, it was immediately made high sport of by “entertainers” and media. Very mean-spirited.
i wanted to see the book, decided to delay, until after the media ran its ugly course.

All this, over days+weeks. Nothing to be gained by overkill.

One day, after school, we were driving along, i gave the Trump book to her.
she read it with interest. i was ok with it, it was descriptive of the office, not political.
she enjoyed it, we discussed.

Later, i repeated with the Pence book. It features the Pence pet rabbit, BOTUS.
she enjoyed it, we discussed.

i hope her takeaway is, “don’t jump on bandwagons,” “listen to both sides of every story,”
even when, “everyone else” is doing it.
these are old messages children need (for life) to respond to the crazy world around them.

The books are not award winners, they are easy reading, lots of pictures.
Two different styles.
All things considered, i think they are age appropriate for the topic, for children.
For me, the books are incidental to the point, others could work just as well.

Mommy, Who is Donald J. Trump?

Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life of a Vice President
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/362 ... -president

 i do not want to bring contention to this thread.
i wanted my response to hyper-politicizing young children to be measured, not political (and civil).
in our family, we do not discuss politics with children. rarely with each other.

please use discretion about responses. :)
if another thread/topic is wanted, please continue.

my granddaughter just told me her mother, 11,
i’d like to be in school where everyone is the same religion.

she’s now 11, 5th grade, public school.

this is her second year in public school.
the 2 schools are near each other, the Catholic school where she began, and the public school.
she continues there with church, Sunday school, and other activities.

she misses being free to learn and discuss Christianity, to observe traditions, sing songs, etc.
she enjoys public school, is in lots of activities. she has ups+downs. she did, before.
she misses faith at center. she has no siblings, this is her extended family.

neither school is perfect.
both schools were culturally-mixed, i.e., students from various continents, settings.
both schools have troubled students.

my daughter fears public school math and science may not be on par.

the things that are most important (to the child) are not even recognized in public school.
she’s told, “not everyone believes as you.” she respects this. and, she misses having the freedom to believe, and live+speak, learn+ask questions about her beliefs. all day long.

i’m glad she has the presence of mind to notice (she noticed, in the first year) and, now to be able to articulate what she misses. (i’d rather she not be in this position.) but, she is.

i have no idea what’s ahead.
if i could, i would return her to her first school in January. this, through 8th grade.

i’m allowed an opinion. :P the decision is her parents’. :)
i pray for them.

i’m describing this here because of the questions, home school? Christian school? public school?
and, the pros+cons. children adapt+adjust. they vary in preferences and needs and abilities.
not every option is possible for every child, or the parents.

Our 4 year old son told his mom today that he is a king. And asked her what he was to wear?
He settled on his Sunday clothes. And then said he wanted to be king of the US...
Then he inquired what a king of the US did?
Our oldest told him about Abraham Lincoln reading his bible and praying for an hour each morning.
So our 4 year old pretended to read his bible for a good while on his bed.
A couple hours later he said, "Mama, I'm ready for work clothes again."

Got to enjoy a big smile this morning. :D
Talking with my daughter+grdaughter as they were driving into school/work.

My daughter piped-up, “Mom! - She has a ‘40 BOOK’ reading challenge at school.”
40 books! my gracious, that’s a lot.

She went on, “Many of the books you’ve sent her and read together (over years) can be used.
WHAT??! - we just read because we want to. lol

The rule asks for books in different categories, not by title.
We’ve read lots of different types of books.

There was no category for foreign language. i suspect many in her school read in second languages.
For awhile, we were reading bilingual books in German. (they all have Spanish in school.)

i suggested she ask her teacher about adding a foreign language category.

She said her teacher also speaks German. :D
So sweet. So fun.

This was a favorite. Early level bilingual. :D
“Kann die Sonne schwimmen?: Ein Bilderbuch mit vielen farbigen”
Illustrationen ab 2 Jahren. (German Edition) (German) Paperback

when possible, i send her the books, then i read with her using the less pricey Kindle.

 Had an idea last month.
My grdaughter, 11, 5th grade, is using computers at school, i’m not sure how much ..
whatever the school uses has passwords+filters.

they have a family laptop in their great room, she does not have a smartphone!
thankfully, her mother continues to limit all tech-time.

One day i asked my daughter if she could set up a limited, children’s email account?
i sometimes find different things i’d like to share with the child. up until now, i send to my daughter’s email address, but, that’s getting cumbersome ..

After informally talking about it, looking at options, my daughter decided to set up a
gmail account, with some filters. i think that’s it, anyway. :D

Last night, we set it up together and “took it for a spin.” i think it’s going to work.
i hope we have no regrets.

i sent her:
this woodcut looks like her, she LOVES to dig in the dirt+sand.
Image

A little off, knowing they’ve been buried in snow for a week!

School’s STILL out, trees down in their neighborhood road entry. No trash service, no mail service .. Their area is accustomed to RAIN-all-year, not snow. So far, their electric is on.

Wellll. the Email idea was not so great. :-|
it began well. but, almost immediately went off the rails!
her friends at school quickly began emailing, wanting to play games, etc. - her mother “cut us off.”
in the dog house. :(

o.well.

slowly, we’re beginning to compromise. not sure how it will go.

but, this evening we had a private phone call. haha. :P
tomorrow is April 1st, we cannot resist. a couple of our favs:
