i noticed this pic+quote on a Plato FB page i just recently “liked.” looks promising.

Yesterday morning I could hear a cricket in the morning... So, I went walking and traced it to somewhere in our boys room... Then my memory came back the day before with our four year old smiling face, "Daddy I caught a cricket!"
I guess I should of said don't let it go freely in your bedroom...

i tried to keep a pet snake in my bedroom, in a shoe box.
that did not end well for my mother. the snake lost his life.

she would not allow pet chickens in, either.
only during incubation and their earliest days.

but, they were not decapitated over it.

.. o. crickets, too. anything that moved was interpretted to be a potential pet.
crawdads. we had lots of crawdaddies. “anything” ..

On a recent library visit with my grdaughter, this was one book among those we picked up.
On this visit, i wanted to find novels that are currently under PC scrutiny for banishment, altho they have been considered classics, and great literature. There is no shortage of such titles.

This book captured her attention right away, she was soon enthralled.
i was not at all sure she would be interested, so, was pleasantly surprised. she’s still 11, i think on the young side for this book.

About half-through, she remarked, “this may be my all-time favorite book,” which is quite a statement, she has read a lot, and enjoyed a lot.

She asked questions as she read, “what is cracklin’ bread?” etc., we looked up definitions together.
My mother used to make gravy with chicken cracklin’s, sometimes put bacon cracklin’s in cornbread. Flavorful!

i told her about how teachers used to tell us students to keep dictionaries near when reading, to look up new words, not skip over. They told us, “if you don’t have to look up words, you need to read harder books!”

She finished the book, so enjoyed it.
Tonight we all watched the first hour of the 1960’s B+W movie together.
We’ll finish tomorrow night.

The story is set in 1932 Alabama, i told her my parents were 15+16 at the time.
Notice, cars and horses shared unpaved roads, no AC, hot summers! lots of background details.

The child is growing up, into a wonderful young lady right before our eyes. Totally unaware.
All God’s design.

The world should be a better place for these young ones coming.
What does the world do to deserve such gifts? i’d really like to know.

Watched it. Not without grammie shedding a few tears.
Definitely a “parental guidance” choice.

Recently, my grdaughter read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and enjoyed it very much. When i bought the book for her, i added this poster to the order (justifying it by getting free shipping) lol. i wasn’t sure if she would have wall space to hang it, but suggested, if not, she could donate it to the nearby Catholic school library .. ??

i gave her the poster after she read the book, and we informally discussed it, C.S. Lewis, and the lion as a symbol in Christianity.

The poster is striking.
we’ve enjoyed reading all the different scriptural names for God, with their scriptural references noted. Her mother suggested a place in her room to hang it. i suggested it can go to the school library at any time. it’s nicely laminated, with care, it will last.

the child has a special fondness for cats.
she is about to begin 6th grade, middle school. publc school.

i’m hoping to relay the message of the strength of a lion to her, to help protect her, for God to be a friend and refuge for the world she will be walkng into.

she has little idea how much she will need Him.

she has already learned there is to be no talk of Christianity at school. lions are ok.
she has a fav stuffed animal she named Leon.

.. how fervently i pray for these young ones in this trying world.

I daresay it’s her favorite because it’s perspective is that of a girl close to her age.

Recently, my grdaughter read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and enjoyed it very much.

If she has an appetite for more of Lewis, the next question is whether to read the Chronicles chronologically. I would suggest The Magician's Nephew next, then following the rest of the Harper Collins reading order.
