My family lives in San Diego County and had suggested I go to Dental City in Mexico- it apparently at the time had a real good reputation. I get more nervous about Mexico these days but my guess is with dental work it requires several visits at times so you have to make sure you have the time to take care of it all. It seems to a crime what they charge these days.

My wife had dental work done overseas. Indian dentist scraped out decay, and instead of doing a root canal, simply filled up the cavity where the nerve was with sealant and covered the hole with analgam. It was a mess when she got home.

My sister in law has been pleased with the work in MX but it has taken many trips there, and that means for them flying across country and then days to a week. Accommodations which aren't super expensive but some of the places they have stayed in have been 'interesting' to say the least. Also you need food. So did they save money? I don't know. And last time they were there - the overall atmosphere was questionable.
Many go all the time and love it. I'm not ready to go.

My mom just paid $8000 for dental work that seemed minor to me. I was shocked. Was just 3 teeth.
If that gives some kind of perspective.

By the same token, our friend was told by his oncologist in Chicago to go to Italy to get treated for his colon cancer (this was because our friend was ready to give up having been given 6-12 months to live & he hated the chemo,/radiation). An oncologist in Italy came up with a back Ii ng soda treatment. In 8 weeks the two masses in his colon were gone & he was cured. He said even with the cost of going to Italy it was a fraction of what he would have spent in Chicago to still face probable death

The thing about having dental or other medical work done in Latin America is that there is an absolutely tremendous range in quality. The range is vastly larger than it is here in the US where regulation and licensing at least tends to ensure a minimum floor.

My wife is a doctor who was trained in both Chile and the United States. Our oldest daughter was born in a Chilean hospital and we have used Chilean health care when down there on long visits. We also have both doctors and dentists in the extended family down there. At the high end, Chilean hospitals, clinics and dental facilities equal or exceed anything you see in the US. They have the best of everything because the wealthy can afford it. At the other end, budget-strapped public facilities are often lacking.

Mexico is even more unequal than Chile and northern Mexico is their traditional "wild west" frontier where anything goes. If you are going to established clinics in affluent parts of Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, etc. then I would expect the quality to meet or exceed US standards. If you are going to clinics in border towns like Matamoros or Ciudad Juárez that are just across the bridge from the US then buyer beware. That is also cartel country and who knows who was paid off in order to establish clinics to service the lucrative American tourist trade. They might be excellent, they might not be. It is very much buyer beware.

Medicaid covers dental in the US for children under the age of 21. The trick is finding dental clinics that will accept Medicaid and then getting an appointment when you do find one.

In my experience, they find ways to get out of covering almost anything beyond a routine cleaning.

I just wonder how much of the cost that self-pays face is a direct result of the discounts that insurers demand, forcing providers to work below cost, which must be made up somewhere?
