In leaner times, our school dinners consisted of boiled cabbage and jacket potatoes only. If there was a dessert we were fortunate to get a cookie or semolina and jam.

If the rationing was easing we would get sausage rolls or cheese and onion pie.

The fact the UK rationed until 1954 may offer an explanation for some of their cuisine.

Quite. It seemed to also vary in stringency. As soon as there was a better supply of any given item, the inventory would not last very long. Nevertheless, we are blessed because we are still here today. Leftover boiled cabbage fried in renderings could be quite lovely if one is hungry.
