For Steve & everyone else: Toad in the Hole

Post by MaxPC »

My wife asked that I pass along this simple yet delicious repast for tea or supper. Only 5 ingredients unless you like salt and pepper: then it is 7.

That dish looks delicious, but has a rather strange name. But we know there are plenty of other foods/dishes that have strange names.

Sweetbreads that have no bread in them.

Headcheese
that contains no cheese

Welsh Rabbit that isn’t rabbit

Lady fingers, no ladies or fingers involved

Rocky Mountain Oysters have nothing to do with the Rocky Mountains or actual oysters.

Those look great. Around here some refer to an egg that is put into a piece of bread where you take a circle out of the middle of the bread. You fry it til the egg is done- this is referred to as toad in a hole around here- I always called it egg in a basket. But different names for same thing is not unusual.

That's what my family called it growing up.

We had a name for it and cannot think what we called it.
