Pulled Pork?

Post by steve-in-kville »

A fellow co-worker is retiring this week after three decades of employment here. A few of us are planning a pot luck meal and within that plan is pulled pork. I have a tried and true recipe that I always use... low and slow in a granny roaster (may be a regional term?) but it always works and there are no complaints. I would be willing to try something new if anyone has a creative recipe they would be willing to share.

Many thanks in advance.

I don't have a recipe but for something like this I would stick to tried and true but if you get a new recipe try it out for future times.

8 or 9 hours over charcoal and your smoke of choice. The results are astounding.

I recently had this on a sandwich and it was amazingly good:

I've used it as a glaze on chicken thighs and I am tempted to try it with pulled pork instead of BBQ sauce... just not this time 8-)

Are you looking for a grill recipe or a crock pot recipe? I always do pulled pork in the crock pot. Cook a pork butt all day on low with your choice of BBQ sauce. Or make your own sauce as you prefer.

I had a pulled pork sandwich a few weeks ago at a Mennonite restaurant. It was SO delicious!

Depending on the cut I use, I sear it in a pan and then finish it on low in a crockpot.

I do the same thing. And then when it is finished I usually swap out some of the liquid for the BBQ sauce of my choice, or if I’m being fussy I do a homemade BBQ sauce. I have found that a lot of meats including pork seem to be injected with a lot of water which renders out when cooking. I’m guessing they do that to increase the weights (and profit) of the meat they sell. So I always end up with too much liquid when I do something like cook pulled pork so I usually drain off some of the liquid and add BBQ sauce at the end. I’ve only cooked store-bought pork butt so I don’t know if the same exact thing happens if you cook pork that you butchered yourself. But I have been curious about that.

I had pulled pork at a fund raiser a bit over a week ago, and I've had persistent diarrhea ever since. Might have been from something else, but it was the right timing for that to be the cause. Now I'm down to 130 lbs (from 135), which is pretty low for someone who is 5' 10". I haven't been able to stop either the sickness or the weight loss. I've even tried over-eating to the point of discomfort nearing pain. (Sorry if this is TMI.)
