In 2012 The Amish returned there and started another settlement. The thumbprint moniker is the nickname some have given this mountaintop valley in Virginia. It is not an extinct volcano. Rather it was formed when the roof of limestone caverns collapsed. We visited there in 2007 (before the Amish returned). Quite a lovely spot. You can see photos at the link below.
