Medical Alert Devices

Post by MaxPC »

I almost titled this "Don't Fence Me In" but I realize my children may be right. They want to get a medical alert device for me, the type that has a "distress button" should I need help. They were "concerned" this week about my solo trips to Gatlinburg at my age and if I were to somehow get caught in some of the remaining hot spots.

Do any of you know about a reliable company for such a device?

My Grandmother has a Life Alert. I can't comment on how well it works because everytime she has been in a situation where she needed medical attention, she has forgot all about it. As long as you remember you have it and you can press the button, you should be good. They also have one that senses falls and will send help automatically so be careful not to drop it.

with no history of crisis incidents, but i do have diabetes, i rely on keeping my cellphone on me or very close, even when walking to the mailbox or taking a shower.

frankly, it's wise for anyone to think of "what-if" situations.
years ago, a young church member (high school) was in a rural accident, thrown from her car.
broken pelvis!
somehow, she crawled to her cellphone, help was on the way!

REMEMBERING to use it could be a real problem.
remembering one's cellphone may be a bit easier?? for me, i think so.

i think? some cellphones have a "1-touch" to 911?
some have tracking, for location.
(even mine) has ICE numbers listed first in "Contacts."
ICE = IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

my ICE numbers are out of state, so ..
come clean up the mess, i guess. :-|

As a fire fighter/first responder i would recommend one of those devices for some one who is feeble and pretty much stays inside or around the house. They could be beneficial to someone that is prone to falls and such like but as far as I know they operate off a base similar to a cordless phone in a house and i believe require a phone line of some type. There may be some styles that aren't like that but not that i know of.

Thank you all for this input. This will be a research project for the next few days I'm sure. I do like the idea of the phone with an emergency button and locator. The trick will be in how to tether it to me so that we aren't separated in an accident.

let us know.
phones do go-flying in accidents, even falls.

i try to wear clothing with pockets, but that is not always possible.
plus, phones fly out of pockets, too. so. life is life.
