That one is best read standing up.gcdonner wrote:Having read other of his books first, I was disappointed with "Common Sense", which seemed to lack some of that in it's conception and expression. You will like, "Will the real heretics please stand up", I think.Wade wrote:Just finished this now too. This is, I believe, is a helpful book. I am thinking better of Bercot's books now and look forward to reading more.MaxPC wrote:Bercot's Common Sense: A New Approach to Understanding Scripture.
Common Sense helped me realize he is more focused on a particular audience. And since I was raised without being taught about scripture or God I realized I wasn't really part of his audience. Not that the unchurched don't come without biases but preconceived notions can be close to none on what scripture is saying when you have never heard it.
I believe this will be helpful in relating to those raised with religious biases. (Not to imply it is better to be raised without God at all...!)
When I finished reading it, I looked at my wife and said, "I am finished with Common Sense." She gave me a strange look and laughed...
Now started reading: Will the Real Heretics Please Stand up.

Re: What book are you reading?
I just finished reading Protecting Their Purity. It is a compilation of different writers from the Keepers At Home magazine.
I liked it.
I recommend it for anyone who has any children from age 1 to preteen at home. It is geared especially for mothers, but its good for Dads to read. It's not a long book, about 140ish? pages so you can read it in one evening.
Easy to read, very relateable for large plain families.
Its encouraging Mothers to be on guard for sexual abuse, and gives accounts and also gives good tips on what to do.

Finding the Big Picture of God's Design for His People
By David Robertson
Just 49 pages in but so far the tone of humility in this book and the view of God is reviving, humbling, sobering, challenging and encouraging.

Re: What book are you reading?
This morning I finally finished reading “Church Matters”, by Gary Miller. Very thought provoking for Plain Mennonites in America.
I recommend it. I may give it to some folks as a gift.
Last night I read “Shaped By The Land”, by D. “Bing” Bingham who lives in my county. This is a collection of true stories from rural American West, taken place primarily in Oregon. Met the author in town and bought the book as a gift for someone.
