Personally I would much rather have the problems of the more free market we have than the more controlled market you have. Now obviously you get the free health care and free college.Hats Off wrote:And under our present system in Canada, that won't happen. It is very difficult or almost impossible to get into dairy without already having enough money to retire on; it is even more difficult to get started in laying hens since quota prices are even more out of reach than dairy.

I see. For some reason I had thought there was free college up there. Well too bad. I was busy packing my bags and now this.appleman2006 wrote:Free college? Trust me. Anything you might save in our slightly cheaper tuitions will be eaten up in extra costs of buying cheese.

Now years ago, we would go camping in WI. Lots of dairy cows/farms! It was a bit shocking to see the vast majority of homesteads had "Land of Lakes" signs in their yards! Regardless of outward appearances, most farms were part of big corporations.
My mother used to describe how farmers fiercely rebelled against the advent of Oleo Margarine (i believe during The Depression) when families were bigger, and hungry. We rarely had real butter when i was growing up, the taste was almost unknown. That's turned around now.
Markets and trade are always a big topic.

What healthcare? I finally got myself a family doctor after 36 years. Haven't needed their services, really. Broken elbow one time and strep another. Pretty sure my taxes covered both incidents, tho.appleman2006 wrote:Agreed. I pay really good money for my healthcare. I am assuming you do as well signtist.Signtist wrote:Free healthcare? Where? These farms would have been part of Land O'Lakes, Inc. only in that each of them own a portion of the co-op and the co-op markets their milk. The co-op doesn't own the farms, cows, etc. 88% of farms in the US are small family farms, and 97% are family owned. I'm not sure how you conclude that most WI farms are part of big corporations.temporal1 wrote:Now years ago, we would go camping in WI. Lots of dairy cows/farms! knowing this, i'm surprised the signs did not make a statement about the co-ops.
in my area, a different state, any type of co-op activity seems to be openly stated. so, i did not think of that.
