I believe that a Christian need not get involved in a role that may require killing of another human being. However, a police officer is primarily involved with maintaining the peace and the vast majority of police officers never kill anyone throughout their career. Many never even draw their gun. I would not pursue a police career as we Christians have other ways to promote peace that do not require killing anyone. But I respect those police officers who work continuously to maintain the peace and are willing to risk their lives doing it. I don't believe, nor does the law, that when a police officer kills someone they are murdering them and must be treated as a murderer. I think God looks at this the same.
Regarding "just war", again we Christians don't need to get involved in the killing aspects of war. We can serve others who are affected by the war and promote peace aside from the violent approach. I'll leave which wars are required and which are not up to God. He has ways above our ways to bring about His plans.
I don't believe in non-resistance in the sense that we are in a war, a spiritual war, and are told to resist. Not a war of flesh and blood but a far greater war in the spirit realm. We are told what our armour looks like and to not be pacifists in the sense of 'doing nothing'. I believe the scriptures indicate that a 'doing nothing pacifist' is sinning when they are not active in the war we believers are in.
The Church should not be so worried about it's physical existence seeking protection but rather should be extremely concerned and ready to fight against what the forces of evil are hitting us with spiritually.
