Remembering Michael Sharp

Post by Dan Z »

Michael Sharp, a young Mennonite fellow who worked for three years with MCC as a project coordinator and peace worker in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was killed recently while on a peace & reconciliation mission under the United Nations. Michael (age 34) was from Hesston Kansas. He worked bravely over the past number of years in the DR of Congo on a mission to convince rebel fighters to surrender their arm and give up on their fight. In three years, through quiet face to face conversations in the jungle, he and his team amazingly convinced over 1,600 rebels to leave the fight. Michael was a missionary in Germany before going to Africa - his dad is a Bible professor at Hesston College.

Here is an NPR report on his life and work.

"Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God."

God bless him. We'll remember them in our prayers.

Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
