Here's the latest: 4th fatality.

The warning about floods is precautionary: there is a large river but it runs through a steep gorge and away from folks. The fire is the greatest danger. They haven't been able to identify the bodies yet.

In spite of the rain, the fires are only 10% contained. The firefighter crews need help.

The rain front also brought a tornado that hit the county southwest of the fires.

It has been confirmed that the cabin my brother in laws were in has been burnt to the ground, everything they left behind is gone.

There was no evacuation notice, they left on there own. As they were driving out thru smoke and flames, they were honking at other cabins and houses that looked occupied to warn them. I hope none of those people were killed.

was shocked this week to learn a local family (my family knows) who moved to that area lost their home and one car to the fire. their young daughter was awoken in the night by someone pounding on their door!

they are all safe.
as they ran, they expected to return the next day. within 2 hours, everything left had burned.

thankfully, he has a job there, insurance to rebuild, and, the community here has a fund to help them. it won't be easy, but they should be ok at restarting their lives (together!)

Thank you for sharing that recorded account, RZehr. Everyone I met there shared similar experiences and emotions. The speed of the wildfire and the location of many of the tourist cabins made it difficult for everyone to be notified. The fire spread so rapidly that by the time some were leaving, the exit road was engulfed and they had to drive through flames. One visiting family found the road blocked by fallen trees and had to leave the vehicle. They became separated looking for an escape, the parents perished and the three sons (in their 20s) were critically injured and had to be sent to a burn unit in Memphis. Some said the heat was so intense that they suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns though they were never closer than 30 feet to flames.

TEMA and Gatlinburg have been trying to create a better evacuation and warning system since this happened. Land lines for telephones were destroyed quickly so reliance on a calling system is not a perfect answer; door to door notification is time consuming and in a fast moving fire, can be deadly for the first responder and the resident. Such disasters don't give much warning of their arrival like a hurricane or even a tornado. The conditions were extremely dry and extremely windy fueling the speed of the fires.

Last I heard one idea being floated is to have siren towers like the old Civil Defense air raid klaxons to supplement evacuation warnings. I like the idea of a rolling loud speaker using vehicles too. Those who are hearing impaired may need to let officials know their situation so they can be notified by other means. No system will be perfect.

Whatever system is implemented, a concerted effort to educate the tourists and renters about it and what those evacuation signals mean is necessary.

The main tourist area of Gatlinburg reopened to the public yesterday, most of the main street businesses are undamaged.

Apologies for this long post.
