Orans posture: yes? no?

Post by MaxPC »

In my circles, the orans posture is praying with hands uplifted. Do you engage this gesture during your church worship?
Yes? No?

Mennonites generally engage in three positions. Sitting, standing and kneeling. The majority is sitting.
The lifting of hands isn’t wrong but I suspect it’s rarely practiced as a view of it being showy, I would disagree with that but I admit if I see it, I would tend to wonder why they did so.

In a plain context, everyone who has raised their hands has been someone who was very suspect and had serious problems.

Whereas in a Pentecostal church this is perfectly normal - the person who won’t raise their hands is shy or isn’t getting involved in the worship.

Sometimes this posture, biblically called "lifting up holy hands" (from 1 Timothy 2.8), is encouraged as part of some specific prayer time, but generally only about a half-dozen or so of us in a congregation of around 50 practice it in worship fairly regularly. I don't sense any social pressure to lift up one's hands or to refrain, which is how I think it should be.
