I’ve been distasteful of VOM for quite some time… I don’t think they actually are something we should be supporting or be favorable to

Presently Catholic priests are soft targets in a number of nations as they do not commit violence against others. Catholic military chaplains are not permitted to carry a weapon either.

Nigeria is a hotspot especially at the moment with the murders of any Christian pastors and members.

Any thoughts about the murder of Christians in Nigeria?

It is Islamic terrorism by Boko Haram and other affiliated Islamic extremist groups seeking to carve out an Islamic state in northern Nigeria. It is the same groups that kidnap hundreds of schoolgirls for ransom and to make into sex slaves or "wives".

They are really no different from ISIS who mainly killed other Muslims in their attempt to carve out an extremist Islamic state in Iraq and Syria. Here is a religious map of Nigeria. They are basically trying to start a religious civil war between north and south just like in Syria and Iraq.

Since 2009, more than 30,000 deaths in Nigeria have been attributed to Islamic terrorism and violence by groups like Boko Harem, so the priests are a very tiny fraction of it.

This distinction was put on my horizon when I heard 1st hand reports of people on the ground in a conflict zone and then noticed a Voice of the Martyrs article holding up on of the combatant groups as Martyrs. I've been a little suspicious of VOM ever since.
VOM is a thoroughly corrupt organisation, ranging from Tom White who committed suicide after he was found out to be a pedophile / possess child pornography, to building a $27 million headquarters (and greasing every palm of local government and business in Bartlesby as they did so), to having a very, VERY efficient “donor services” team ready to relieve any elderly Christian family of their assets.

Richard Wurmbrand’s family (his son specifically, if I call correctly) has spoken out quite a bit about this. In short, I wouldn’t believe anything VOM says. Every story is crafted to keep those donations flowing in.

And now, back to the OP.

(VOM discussion can be done in another thread.)

As I recall the word martyr literally means testify. Perhaps it's use could be limited to those whose testimony is more important than their own lives.

I don't know how to tell whether these folks are praying for their persecutors and returning good for evil or whether they are resorting to self-defense and armed guard protection.
