Are You Dead Yet?

Post by Valerie »

Years ago, a Christian counselor gave this to me when I was going through a trial- I am posting it here in case anyone could benefit from it. If you disagree with it, I am sorry- but it helped me a lot- I hope it helps you- as it does me as I read it periodically-

Dying To Self When you are forgotten, or neglected, or purposely set at naught, andyou don't sting and hurt with the insult or the oversight, but your heart is happy, being counted worthy to suffer for Christ,THAT IS DYING TO SELF.When your good is evil spoken of, when your wishes are crossed, your advice disregarded, your opinions ridiculed, and you refuse to letanger rise in your heart, or even defend yourself, but take it all inpatient, loving silence,THAT IS DYING TO SELF.When you lovingly and patiently bear any disorder, any irregularity, any impunctuality, or any annoyance; when you stand face-to-face withwaste, folly, extravagance, spiritual insensibility - and endure it asJesus endured -THAT IS DYING TO SELF.When you are content with any food, any offering, any climate, anysociety, any raiment, any interruption by the will of God,THAT IS DYING TO SELF.When you never care to refer to yourself in conversation, or to recordyour own good words, or itch after commendations, when you can trulylove to be unknown,THAT IS DYING TO SELF.When you can see your brother prosper and have his needs met and canhonestly rejoice with him in spirit and feel no envy, nor questionGod, while your own needs are far greater and in desperatecircumstances,THAT IS DYING TO SELF.When you can receive correction and reproof from one of less staturethan yourself and can humbly submit inwardly as well as outwardly, finding no rebellion or resentment rising up within your heart,THAT IS DYING TO SELF.Are you dead yet? In these last days, the Spirit would bring us to the cross. "That I may know Him...being made conformable unto His death. -Phil 3:10- Author Unknown

Thanks Valerie. I just separated it from a one paragraph to help me ponder each one of these. Sure makes me see I still have a long way to go in Dying To Self. However, I do see some progress God is making. I think Martin Luther King Jr. once said - “I may not be the man I want to be; I may not be the man I ought to be; I may not be the man I could be; I may not be the man I truly can be; but praise God, I'm not the man I used to be".

Dying To Self

When you are forgotten, or neglected, or purposely set at naught, and you don't sting and hurt with the insult or the oversight, but your heart is happy, being counted worthy to suffer for Christ,THAT IS DYING TO SELF.

When your good is evil spoken of, when your wishes are crossed, your advice disregarded, your opinions ridiculed, and you refuse to let anger rise in your heart, or even defend yourself, but take it all inpatient, loving silence,THAT IS DYING TO SELF.

When you lovingly and patiently bear any disorder, any irregularity, any impunctuality, or any annoyance; when you stand face-to-face with waste, folly, extravagance, spiritual insensibility - and endure it as Jesus endured -THAT IS DYING TO SELF.

When you are content with any food, any offering, any climate, any society, any raiment, any interruption by the will of God,THAT IS DYING TO SELF.

When you never care to refer to yourself in conversation, or to record your own good words, or itch after commendations, when you can truly love to be unknown,THAT IS DYING TO SELF.

When you can see your brother prosper and have his needs met and can honestly rejoice with him in spirit and feel no envy, nor question God, while your own needs are far greater and in desperate circumstances,THAT IS DYING TO SELF.

When you can receive correction and reproof from one of less stature than yourself and can humbly submit inwardly as well as outwardly, finding no rebellion or resentment rising up within your heart,THAT IS DYING TO SELF.

Are you dead yet? In these last days, the Spirit would bring us to the cross. "That I may know Him...being made conformable unto His death. -Phil 3:10- Author Unknown

Thanks for separating that out Sudsy- and I love the quote by Martin Luther. We should be able to see some growth & maturing along the path to glory- I think it was a pastor from Charity who said "The way up is down". That stuck with me.

Don't forget the King Jr :)
In an elementary school I'm placed at, there's a poster about Harriet Tubman and "Martin Luther".. I asked if they were studying Reformers

i agree.
i wish more recognition would be given about how MLK Jr's father LEGALLY RENAMED himself and his son after Martin Luther. this strikes me as an unusual+important detail in their journies.

instead, possibly like you notice, it happens that MLK Jr's name is shortened to Martin Luther, once again leading the way to forgeting/distorting history. as happens all through history.

here we can witness how it happens. so many distortions.

Valerie, i appreciate your thread OP. i'm reading with interest. :)

Most or all of this drama, humiliation, wasted taxpayer money could be spared -
with even modest attempt at presenting balanced facts from the start.
