It was our idea in the first place, but by the time the American Revolution came around the copyright had expired, and they neglected to give us credit.
i understand the humor/irony intended, i think .. :)
Please correct if needed, wasn’t this Jesus’ idea, and one He not only did not copyright, but He instructed believers to freely+generously share His messages with all the world?

What i’m straining to grasp in this thread is how early-on Jesus’ messages were (misinterpreted/misused?) .. and, really, in all times since Jesus (and later, scriptures) folks have sought authentic Truth.

Confusion remains remarkably easy.

It “gets me” how many great minds, mostly Catholic monks and priests, with rare education and access to books and scriptures, were studying and concluding “what Jesus said” was not necessarily what was taught+believed. (It seems to me) this is where the Protestant Reformation and Anabaptists “came from” .. made different in history with the new aid of moveable type/the printing press.

It’s all about trying to understand Jesus Christ (while remaining fragile, vulnerable, human).

Just remembered a video series i first viewed on PBS/BBC. Before 2007. i think.
i later bought the DVDs. i believe 6 episodes on 2 discs.

Probably .. some or all episodes are on youtube. :)

In addition to the history, this is a walk through locations i don’t expect to ever visit in my lifetime.
While viewing, i always wonder if ohio jones or other forum members have actually visited??

It helps me imagine what real life may have been like in those ancient times.

“I am of the Black Baptist persuasion in the United States. My understanding is that, because of persistent segregation, Black Baptists either left or were driven away from White Baptists.
So today, we have the Southern Baptist Convention - the White Baptists, and the National Baptist Convention - the Black Baptists.

I went to a Catholic high school and that is where I learned about the Protestant Reformation. Being a contrarian, I chose to become a Lutheran - at a Catholic school.
Still, my family background was Black Baptist, and I returned to my roots years later.

What I intended to say was, "Thank you!"
Thank you for clarifying the term "Anabaptist": over the years, the Greek meaning of the prefix became cloudy to me. I thought calling ourselves "Baptist" in the U.S. was a shortening of the term.

Yours is the second video to make the connection between the Amish, Mennonites, and Baptists.

Also, you explained that the Anabaptists wound up splitting from the original schismites like Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli primarily because they opposed State involvement with the Church.
That's huge! And it shows our hypocrisy in how Reformers executed dissenters the same way the Catholic Church executed Reformers.

Flawed human beings we be.

Pardon my rambling.
I'm older than you by at least four decades, yet I focused on your content like a student still in school.
Really good work: I subscribed!“

For all the formality and officialness of things, my experience is local parishes, priests, bishops, and even Popes change or ignore things all the time.

In my own world, one Pope says the Pope has no authority to restrict the Tridentine Mass for all time and the next Pope does.

Zwingli, the epitome of Swiss neutrality, straddling both sides of the fence!

I speak as a Swiss.
My Dad, before he arrived in Canada, was from a canton close to Zurich and adhered to the Zwingli principles of faith.
In order to marry my mother, a Roman Catholic, he had to sign a document saying he would never speak of the bible or of his faith to any future offspring, which promise he kept.

Growing up as devout Catholics, the word 'Zwingli' was synonymous with 'Daddy's going to hell' :-)
Those were pre-Vatican II days.

I left the Roman faith over 40 years ago at which time I diligently studied the doctrines of the former 'bad guys', the Reformers.
Then when I was thoroughly indoctrinated, I was shocked to discover that my Dad's hero was, in fact, a persecutor of the REAL believers in Sola Scriptura.

I was the one poked fun at the RCC of which I belong. I consider the reformation inevitable, nonetheless harmful.

You know what’s worse than a bad Pope?
Everyone gets to be his own Pope.

If you like the show I will be appearing through Friday.

i’m not sure what you’re referring to, but i wouldn’t be surprised to find, as a Catholic, you’re both welcome and “get poked” on this forum. To be honest, most here get poked over something.
