I agree. But read the report - it's interesting. Only about 1/4 of Americans could correctly identify the person who gave the Sermon on the Mount. Americans wildly overestimate the number of Jews and Arabs living in the United States. There are other things like this ... religious knowledge that you and I think of as basic is beyond many Americans these days. They don't think that way.

14/15. I missed Kabbalah, too.

I am not really surprised by the report. Many people in the US are not very knowledgeable about the religion they self-identify with, let alone caring to know about others'. I live in the Bible Belt, and often even folks who "believe" the Bible is from God are ignorant of its basic content.

I thought it was interesting that people who claim to be atheists did about as well as any of the broad categories (but still not very well.) Does this suggest atheists feel it is necessary to be somewhat informed about exactly what in religions they are rejecting? Or that they have personal experience of religion prior to identifying as atheists? Or what?

Atheists on average have a higher education. That is probably what it is. They studied a little broader.
