How vengeful are you?

Post by steve-in-kville »

The opposite of being vengeful is being forgiving and benevolent.

I think many can be vengeful in their hearts but never carry out any type of retaliation. Others have the gift of never even taking it that far.

Discuss and vote. I have no agenda here.

I consider myself forgiving and benevolent. But sometimes it takes awhile to do that. Forgiveness doesn't always occur just like that, but is a process through prayer and taking thoughts captive to fully forgive. If someone can forgive and forget, right away, good for them. That isn't how it works for me.

Excellent explanation. I struggle with this a bit but lately I've caught myself and instead of "keeping score" I pray for the situation at hand.

I think people, especially Christians, sabotage their own happiness by keeping score and harboring bitter and vengeful thoughts. As it has been said, bitterness is like drinking poison expecting someone else to die.

Inwardly I can feel more vengeful than I ever present outwardly.

And you expect vengeful people to believe that?

Is it biblical? Is it Christlike? Is it loving? Is it true? How can I find out?

I don't think that I am "vengeful".
I am irascible and on very rare occasions I have decided to let my rage flow. But that was more a rational decision.
On the other hand, against Steve, I must confess that the opposite of vengefulness is in my case not something noble like "forgiving". I am by nature a submissive personality.
If someone treats me badly, my first idea is that I probably have deserved it. If not, my second idea is that I don't want no beef with him.

I think it possible to be vengeful and think it to be justifiable. I sometimes feel justified in taking some kind of revenge and this is my old nature getting control. When it comes to this subject this text comes to mind - Romans 12:19-21
Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
How one does that and not give way to the flesh, is not in my power. One of my on-going battles. I think turning the other cheek is one thing but actually doing good to someone who we feel harms us is how we are to respond.
