I think it depends if there is anything positive in the altering.
I went through a couple of really awful experiences, but these things, while not good in themselves, have made me more sensitive to other people. (This can be rather embarrassing, because I more easily become emotional, as in getting "choked up", or crying.)

Agreed. "By their fruits you shall know them" has always served well. Those who go through life altering, negative experiences can learn, move on, and produce positive fruit. Or they can wallow in bitterness and misery, rehashing old injuries.
