Will the Old Orders who raise tobacco start raising marijuana?

Post by GoodGirl »

Just curious on people’s opinions.

I’ve heard discussions on it, that “it’s just a matter of time.”

I doubt it.

At least out here on the west coast, growing cannabis is exceedingly regulated with a very limited number of licenses available. It isn't something you just decide to do as some alternative crop like tobacco. In fact, it isn't even a row crop like tobacco that you'd grow on ordinary farms. The vast majority of cannabis operations are big secure multi-million dollar hydroponic greenhouse operations with armed security, guards, etc. And they consume enormous quantities of electricity for all the grow lights

The operations around here look like this

Also, a lot of them are going broke because there is an enormous glut of pot around here in the Pacific Northwest since there are too many licensed growers producing too much pot for the local market And they aren't allowed to take it out of state due to Federal laws. So they are sitting on mountains of the stuff they can't sell.

Industrial hemp of the sort used for textiles is a different story. That is grown on ordinary farms with ordinary farm equipment and might be a more likely crop for small farmers. But I think there is glut of that as well.

I know of at least one farmer growing hemp in the midwest, and someone recently sent me an article they said came from this link. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... dwest.html

Considering it’s a felony to transport marijuana across state lines, I’m wondering how California buyers are going to get it.

Maybe they got the same legal advice Amos Miller did?

Interestingly, For tax purposes, You must report marijuana sales as income but can not deduct the expenses of the business other than the cost of goods purchased even though it is legal in that state.

Yes. If documenting the income would admit to committing a crime, you can file a “fifth amendment return”. The actual gross income received is written down, but no further documentation that could show it is ill gotten gains. (This means the government can require criminal proceeds to be reported, and then levy criminal charges against someone who doesn’t report it.)

It is also difficult to participate in the banking system, as most banks won’t accept business deposits from selling illegal drugs. So you have to carry big bundles of cash around, and usually that means hiring private security too. None of this sounds wholesome for God’s people to be involved in.

Wow! Thanks, I had no idea.

I just have this picture in my head of them plopping them out in a field, like they do with tobacco now.

Where I live (PA), it’s legal with a medical card, and almost all connecting states have legalized it for adults in general.

Maybe it’s just me, but I have a daughter with epilepsy that drugs/diet/etc do not always help… and I’d rather see farmers growing something that has some medicinal value over tobacco any day.
