We just opened the crock to take the sauerkraut out that we made and either freeze it or give some to our children so we have fresh sauerkraut to mix with pork and it's in the slow cooker now.

Taco soup that didn't get eaten for lunch yesterday after we received an invitation at church.

Re sauerkraut, we made some two years ago and still have some jars left over. We've been eating a pair of beeves we butchered lately, and sauerkraut doesn't seem to go with that as well. With hotdogs is excellent, though.

Is eating pork and sauerkraut an Anabaptist New Years thing or something?

I think it’s a very Pennsylvania thing…most of the people I grew up with did Pork and Sauerkraut on New Years Day irrespective of their religious beliefs.

One of my grandparent’s side that is Hungarian also did this. It must be a very broad European custom.

My wife is making a pot roast with onions, potatoes and carrots for our lunch. Leftovers will become stew she said. I somehow doubt there will be leftovers.

My PA relatives usually mention this as their menu choice. Mom, although a PA native, never made it at this time of year that I can remember; it's just not a custom in this area.
