I think that’s a neat custom. I have some sauerkraut that my father in law made. I’m going to get some of it out and eat it tonight. Having been gone from the East for four-five generations, we’ve lost this custom.ohio jones wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 2:18 pmMy PA relatives usually mention this as their menu choice. Mom, although a PA native, never made it at this time of year that I can remember; it's just not a custom in this area.HondurasKeiser wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 12:13 pmI think it’s a very Pennsylvania thing…most of the people I grew up with did Pork and Sauerkraut on New Years Day irrespective of their religious beliefs.

In the south pork was traditional poor people food and butchering was done in late fall or early winter so the meat would keep longer. So Christmas and New Year's were when pork was eaten. No kraut though, instead black eyed peas and collard greens (which produce into early winter).

I forgot to add earlier, you must have applesauce with pork and sauerkraut. Mashed potatoes are a nice extra.

As I understand PA cuisine (at least as practiced by my grandfather and his extended family), you must have applesauce with everything.eccentric_rambler wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 11:10 pm I forgot to add earlier, you must have applesauce with pork and sauerkraut. Mashed potatoes are a nice extra.

No pork and sauerkraut here. Not a fan of either. Pork and Sauerkraut can make a house smell like someone had a bad case of flatulence. Not only that, pork and sauerkraut creates a gastronomical gift (sic) that keeps on giving long after eaten. Marinated and then fried Venison and potatoes made a great New Year's meal.
