Post by Soloist »

rules,

1: No debating/arguing in this thread

2: State your view on the question.

3: List church affiliation or closest alignment.

4: Questions for clarifying positions are permitted.

How do you or your church handle doctrinal or practice disagreements?

Catholic World:
We move slowly and we seem to love our meetings; committees; synods; etc.

In our case I think it's necessary.

Congregation: Split from Beachy Amish Mennonite, formed as independent congregation
How it is done: A meeting is held, sometimes just a men's meeting, other times members' meeting, and opinions are voiced. This may be followed by a questionnaire, or by a show of hands. Then the leadership decides. Actual figures for responses are generally not given.

How I think it should be handled:
Questions of Doctrine: Strictly by close attention to the Scriptures
Questions of Practice: Through open discussion in member's meetings conducted as business meetings (using Robert's Rules of Order if necessary to maintain order & focus), using secret ballots for most decisions. (RRoO has the advantage of providing a mechanism by which a motion is put on the floor for consideration; amended by addition, substitution, or deletion; then called to vote for a pass or fail.)
