I've had the same thought many times. I think we should learn from them. I think the growth is for two reasons though. Part is because of the evangelism efforts, and part is because of their teaching that they are the one true church. Regarding the second part - A. I think there is something about joining a group that claims exclusivity to truth that appeals to people, and B. I think this belief in exclusivity makes retention easier.
I think these two points of strong evangelism and OTC teaching apply to Holdemans growth as well.
