I think the brother mentioned is alive and well.

I'm just asking what state he is in, since he is neither married, nor single, nor in a state able to reconcile with his first, legitimate wife.

I suppose we could all agree that he is not in an enviable state; a state of separation. In some ways he is like the married and some ways he is like a single; but in the end he is neither.

I wouldn't call church standards a "collective church conviction". That isn't what they are. Churches don't have 100% agreement on 100% of the issues. Standards end up being a reflection of what the majority or leaders believe is needed or wise.
I think the word conviction in that term overstates the issue and it turns into a straw man.

I suspect that if standards were more often really truly a reflection of what the majority thinks they would often be less controversial.

Even though a church standard may not reflect what the majority thinks, there are times when the majority does not want to change it.
Example - Our church has a old standard that says brothers and sisters shall not hold life insurance policies. I don't think that the majority of todays membership would feel that having a life insurance policy is sin, nor would they have much of a conviction on the issue. However, because the ministers stated that they feel strongly about leaving it in, the majority of the rest of the men will defer to them.

But I don't see this as a Romans 14 example.
