Context
I would classify "civil disobedience" as nonviolent resistance, as distinct from nonresistance. Recognizing that "we must obey God rather than men" could in a certain situation lead a nonresistant person to behavior that happens to appear similar to "civil disobedience."

Wasn't there a book on the shift from nonresistance to pacifism in what became MCUSA?

Posted here because I'm not allowed to post in the original thread.

"A Mighty Wind" documented that change well, and particularly how the change was influenced by returning missionaries.

What is the main difference between non-resistance & pacifism? Maybe this was on MD, kind of sounds familiar but apparently I've forgotten, sorry-

I commend you for your integrity as none of the posters in the other thread (so far) meet the qualifications. It really is just as simple as starting another thread that may end up becoming the main thread.

I had only replied to Boot in the other thread, not to be a poster in it but to try and help bootstrap to understand why his posting in there wasn't in accordance to what MaxPC had requested- my post was to boot not to answer MaxPC question-since it appeared boot was somewhat offended

There are two books that address this:

Leo Driedger and Donald B. Kraybill, Mennonite Peacemaking: From Quietism to Activism. (Herald Press, 1994).

Ervin R. Stutzman, From Nonresistance to Justice: The Transformation of Mennonite Church Peace Rhetoric, 1908-2008. (Herald Press, 2011.

Another book that discusses the shift from a larger context than the Mennonite Church (the author is formerly Grace Brethren) is The Peacemongers by Robert Culver (Tyndale House, 1985). Although he ultimately rejects both, he is quite clear about the distinction between orthodox Anabaptist nonresistance and the "new breed" of theologically liberal, economically socialist, politically activist "pacifism".

So would orthodox Anabaptist non-resistance include holding signs today that say something like "Jesus loves refugees" or "Jesus was a Mid-Eastern refugee" that are aimed at the king's executive order, or would it be limited to such things as going and helping immigrants learn how to shop at Wal-Mart and being ready to give an answer if asked of the hope that lies within?

Speaking of refugees, are there any organizations assisting Syrian immigrants in Southern PA (Franklin Co.) or Maryland? I would like to assist them here in the US if it is possible.
