Romans 14:5

Post by Josh »

One person regards one day holier than other days, and another regards them all alike. Each must be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day does it for the Lord. The one who eats, eats for the Lord because he gives thanks to God, and the one who abstains from eating abstains for the Lord, and he gives thanks to God.
Paul seems to say here that observing a specific day, whether the Jewish Sabbath or Sunday, is acceptable, yet another person who follows God regards all days alike.

For those of you who either believe the third commandment is binding on New Testament Gentile believers, or that Sunday must be kept as a day of some special observance, how do you reconcile this teaching of Paul?

(We studied this passage and the parallel one in Corinthians last night at Bible study, so it is fresh on our minds.)

I believe that every day is holy unto the Lord-
I believe the Christians had to choose a day to 'congregate' and they chose Sunday- since you were in 1 Corinthians you can read how the church service a psalm was read, a tongue, a prophesy etc-
It distinguished them from the Jews who went on Saturday-
Just like fasting by Jews was Tuesday & Thursdays- Fasting for Christians was/is Wednesday & Fridays- (OF Course anytime one can fast in addition to these days but these were the "Church" days to fast corporately like the Jews had done. Remember the Jews had a 'calendar' and so did/does the Church but in context, the point of Romans 14 is not to have disputes over doubtful things and to receive one who is weak in the faith- so we don't discourage them based on our beliefs, isn't it?
