On being liberal and our diversity (poll)

Post by steve-in-kville »

One thing I appreciate about the forum is the diversity we have. Both current setting as well as backgrounds and upbringing. Its interesting to read about each others views on church applications and the reasoning behind them, so I created this poll, more for my own amusement but to also start discussion as people see fit.

You can vote on all that apply.

I have read some of the other threads. To be honest I am not certain I know what most mean by liberal. Could we identify what liberal and conservative mean in the context of this discussion?

I would have preferred to vote none of the above.

Truth be told, I don't either. The only certainty I have come to is this: Its all about where you are in your church life, and your individual walk with God. There will always be people who you consider more liberal than you, and those who would appear being legalistic.

Years ago, in a more conservative setting, the big deal was the teenage girls wearing smaller coverings and the fact that the cape dress was falling away. That was liberal.

In my current setting, our congregation is considered quite conservative in our conference, mainly due to out stance on moral issues.

I would guess we are defining conservative and liberal based on our Mennonite membership, based on Ernie's chart or Kraybill's Traditional, Transitional, Transformational categories. Or again, it might be based on MD's categories of old order, ultra, moderate, moderate/progressive, progressive. In Pa., we would see the Mennonite traditions ranging from Stauffer/Reidenbach to Old Order (Groffdale) to Old Order (Weaverland) to Eastern/Nationwide/Appalachian to Pilgrim to Keystone to Lancaster to MCUSA.

I believe that is a new Eastern division.

Quite honestly, I cringe whenever I hear the term. When we judge a person by the condition of their appearance instead of the condition of their heart, we walk a fine line.
