In one of the few Mayan codices that survives, the Dresden Codex, there is a table calculating solar and lunar eclipses. According to the Mayan religion, these natural phenomena were harbingers of imminent cataclysmic destruction. What did religion demand to stop "the end of the world"?
Ritual sacrifices, both of animals and humans. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of animals and humans would be bled alive and then killed in elaborate civic rituals to "appease the gods" and thus "stop the impending doom."
This superstitious idea was of course not limited to the Mayans, we have evidence that many other pre-Columbian indigenous populations had a similar eschatology.
For example, the Spanish priest Bernardino de Sahagún, who traveled to New Spain (Mexico) in 1529, learned Nahuatl, and dedicated more than 50 years to the study of Aztec beliefs, records the events that accompanied the total solar eclipse that occurred in Mexico in March 1531. He writes:
"Everyone was restless, bewildered, frightened. There was crying. The common people cried out, raising their voices, screaming. Screams were heard everywhere. Light-skinned people were killed as sacrifices. Captives were killed. Everyone offered their blood. In all the temples there was singing and chanting. An uproar, there were war cries. Thus it was said, if this is completed, it will be dark forever. The demons of darkness will descend and eat men."
This was the order of the day before Christianity arrived in the Americas with each eclipse or astronomical phenomenon.
Today, thanks to the religion of the crucified Christ, whom the prophet Malachi calls the "Sun of righteousness," we can sit back, put on some sunglasses, and enjoy the wonders of the Creator of all things, without fearing death or having superstitious mania that leads us to barbarism, since the Christian Faith does not annul reason, on the contrary, it illuminates it to its zenith.
So be grateful: the light of the Gospel has civilized us.
