Hmmm?
Because your Congress is dysfunctional.

For example, since the GOP took over the House in 2022 they haven't passed a single individual spending bill which is where you would actually allocate NEW money towards specific things like immigration enforcement. All they have done is go from one self-inflicted made-up crisis over the debt ceiling to another self-inflicted made-up crisis over the budget. Which ends up in some sort of continuing resolution that rolls over the previous year's spending unchanged.

This clown show is actually what got Kevin McCarthy stripped of his speakership. When they actually came to some sort of interim spending agreement last summer and the extreme right in his party threw a hissy fit since they actually wanted a government shut-down. More recently Speaker Johnson has agreed to another continuing resolution to kick the can down the road until mid-March or so.

The point is that when they play these endless budgetary games, they aren't actually doing their REAL jobs which is to appropriate funds to specific agencies for specific tasks and priorities, such as the border. And then also do oversight over how those funds are being spend and how the laws they have passed are being implemented. They aren't doing any of that.

And make no mistake, rolling over the 2022 budget to 2023, and now the 2023 budget to 2024 actually amounts to a budget cut, even if they tack on an extra 1% or whatever. Because the work of an agency like the border patrol gets more expensive every year. Equipment like new vehicles goes up more than 1% per year. Construction of new facilities goes up by more than 1% per year. And payroll costs go up by more than 1% per year as well since employees get both raises and promotions which over time makes them more expensive. And the costs of employee benefits like healthcare also go up. You don't just fire your older more expensive workers and hire 24 year-olds every year. And you don't refuse to promote people to higher ranks simply because it costs more.

So that is why new money isn't going to do things like "staff up and improve the system". It is because Congress would rather play budgetary games and posture for the cameras and news shows than do their actual jobs.

I'm still not understanding why the federal government not spending more money means that hordes of people can just walk across the border (illegally) and not pay the regular fees the rest of us have to pay.

There isn't any other government agency that works like that. If they are behind on things, budget cuts, etc. then we just get long waitlists or have to wait in line. You can't just go do whatever you want.

Immigration doesn't need to be any different.

They are following the laws as they are written and using the resources they have available.

If you want a different outcome then that requires: (1) different laws, (2) more resources, or (3) BOTH.

Which brings us back to Congress actually doing its job instead of just demagoguing a situation that they created through their deliberate inaction.

The law, as written, does not say to sneak across the border.

Under US law, crossing the border illegally doesn't actually invalidate an asylum claim or preclude someone from making one. If you want to see that changed, contact your congressman and senators and ask them to actually do something about it.

Or you can pointlessly whine about it.

Historically many refugees crossed borders illegally to request asylum and we even wrote Academy Award winning musicals about it. But they were rich and white. Here is a famous family of illegal aliens crossing a border illegally to request asylum.

The millions attempting to cross the border who often take plane flights from far away places are not "asylum seekers", and there's no reason any of us need to pretend that they are. The fact some may lie and claim they are doesn't make what they are doing actually legal.

But that's a moot point. It, indeed, remains illegal to try to enter the country other than at a designated port of entry, and being an asylum seeker doesn't invalidate that. This has been documented elsewhere on MN and doesn't need to be repeated here.

It appears you would be wrong on your assertion that they haven't passed a single individual spending bill.
The House has passed seven of the dozen full-year funding bills, clearing partisan fiscal 2024 spending plans for the Pentagon, departments of Homeland Security, Veterans Affairs, State, and a host of other agencies in recent months.

OK I stand corrected. As of December they hadn't gotten any of them done. Even though the 2024 fiscal year started October 1st 2023.

But still, none of those bills have gotten out of Congress yes. They still need to reconcile with the Senate and pass reconciliation bills to forward to the president. As of right now, not a single one has passed out of Congress for the president's signature, they are all just unpassed bills. That is why we are still operating on the continuing resolution agreement made back in the summer with the debt ceiling agreement rather than individual spending bills for individual agencies.

So we can still blame Congress and whatever logjams are preventing the spending bills passed individually by the House and Senate from becoming reconciled and forwarded on to the president.

I haven’t noticed any government shutdowns, and immigration offices remain open, as do legal ports of entry.

I do know the Republicans have asked Biden to enforce existing border laws in exchange for funding for Ukraine. For whatever reason Biden doesn’t want to do that. I guess he’d rather see Ukraine get steamrolled by the Russians than have a safe, secure U.S. border.
