BUT sometimes I feel like the buyer gets perhaps way too good a deal at the Amish expense- I am interested to know-

Most farmers who regularly supply produce auctions have learned to look at their yearly average and find that they then get close to the average market price for the year. If however someone uses it only to get rid of their surplus they will probably find the returns to be poor.
Someone that has an above average product quality wise will find that with time he will built up an above average demand for the product and he will be rewarded for it.
I have often thought that produce markets are really an example of hard core capitalistic market principles at work in a raw way that we rarely see.
As a buyer I can tell you that I could not depend on our produce market as my only source but it is an excellent tool in my bag. and while there are very good reasons which are more complicated than I have time to share right now as to why I am not a regular seller at the auction I have every confidence that I could be and would do quite well at it.

That pizza shop applied to the state for its beer license so it could sell 6-packs, like every other pizza shop in that area. The entire town was up in arms, threatening to boycott the pizza shop. It didn't matter that two blocks east there was a bar/tavern that sold booze (among other "services") and another two miles from that was another hotel/bar that did the same. All in the little town of Schaefferstown.

But one pizza shop wanted its beer license and everyone looses their minds! Tell me how this makes sense??!!

The article in the OP, which apparently inspired the title of the thread, is actually a bit misleading. The phrase "on the edge of Lancaster County’s Amish region" is a rather roundabout way of saying the casino is planned for Berks County.

I agree. Still, casinos bring in organized crime, prostitution, drugs and other illegal activities. A pizza shop selling beer? Drunk driving. Both are bad. One has a lot more illegal activity associated with it.

it sounds as tho the customers were happy to have a choice to do business in a beer-free shop.
i would be. i would be sad if that business decided to “go with the flow.” i understand economics.

business owners must know their customers as well as their goods+services.

customers must understand, if they want to be catered-to, they must provide enough business to keep local doors open.
