I agree.

For those who do know German, I find it a LOT easier to listen to Hitler with headphones, the sound quality is bad on these recordings, I understand it much better that way.

The English ... is less intense than the original German. Hitler's speeches were delivered with a very intense tone. But it's still very helpful to hear this SPOKEN, you don't get the same feel from written transcripts.

I also struggle to understand Hitler as a German speaker. A lot of it has does have to do with the poor sound quality and the intensity in which he speaks. He's shouting most of the time.

If I were a history teacher, I would have my students listen to this to get them thinking about ideas, consequences and dehumanization.

That may be a very good idea. The true horror of what is being communicated does not come through in the text as well as it does here,

Here is the full 2.5 hour Hitler speech, 7 months before WW2.
I think it is where that first OP clip is from.

First 20 minutes or so-
It is truly remarkable just how much 1939 Hitler, and 2022 Putin match. They both said that there were mistreated Germans and Russians across the border that wanted and should belong to the homeland. They both eased troop into the matter. They both had winning votes in those regions in favor of merging with the homeland. And other powers didn’t stop them.

There are parallels that go back to the Reformation and Luther railing against foreign powers and Jews.

An index of the propaganda techniques mentioned in the above transcript, also generated with GPT: An index of propaganda techniques highlighted in the previous outline of Hitler's speech, with explanations of how each technique manipulates emotions, alongside examples from modern non-American politicians.

Index of Propaganda Techniques Used in the Speech

1. Glorification of the Past
  • Emotions Played On: Pride, nostalgia.
  • Usage: This technique involves highlighting past greatness to evoke pride and legitimize current policies by drawing parallels.
  • Example: Vladimir Putin often evokes Russia’s historical achievements and past empires to justify his regime's actions and policies, enhancing national pride and his own legitimacy.
2. Simplification (Us vs. Them)
  • Emotions Played On: Unity against a common enemy, fear.
  • Usage: This technique simplifies complex issues by dividing the world into allies and adversaries, making it easier to rally support against perceived enemies.
  • Example: Recep Tayyip Erdogan frequently frames global and domestic politics in terms of "us" (the Turkish people and government) against "them" (Kurdish militants, coup plotters), simplifying complex issues into a battle between good and evil.
3. Demonizing the Opposition
  • Emotions Played On: Suspicion, contempt.
  • Usage: Opponents are portrayed as morally corrupt or threatening, which justifies harsh measures against them.
  • Example: Narendra Modi's regime often portrays political dissenters as anti-national, which helps to discredit and marginalize opposition.
4. Fear-Mongering
  • Emotions Played On: Fear, insecurity.
  • Usage: This technique involves highlighting or exaggerating threats to instill fear, making the public more accepting of restrictive measures.
  • Example: Xi Jinping emphasizes the threats of Western influences undermining Chinese culture and society to justify strict censorship and surveillance practices.
5. Nationalism
  • Emotions Played On: Pride, superiority.
  • Usage: Promotes national pride and unity, often at the expense of international relationships and minorities.
  • Example: Viktor Orban promotes Hungarian sovereignty and cultural purity, often criticizing EU policies and portraying Hungary as being under threat from foreign influence and immigration.
6. Invoking a Crisis
  • Emotions Played On: Urgency, fear.
  • Usage: A real or perceived crisis is used to justify extraordinary measures, bypassing normal procedures.
  • Example: Bashar al-Assad frames the Syrian civil war as a crisis caused by terrorist groups and foreign invaders, which he uses to justify severe actions against rebels and civilians.
7. Ad Hominem Attacks
  • Emotions Played On: Contempt, ridicule.
  • Usage: Personal attacks are used to discredit opponents without addressing their arguments.
  • Example: Rodrigo Duterte often uses personal insults and threats against critics and media, undermining their credibility and distracting from the substantive issues they raise.
8. Card Stacking (Selective Use of Facts)
  • Emotions Played On: Confidence in leadership, mistrust of others.
  • Usage: Only presenting information that supports one's own position while omitting or discrediting opposing facts.
  • Example: Alexander Lukashenko presents only government-approved statistics and narratives that show Belarus in a positive light, suppressing independent reports that contradict his messages.

I'm impressed with how accurately AI can identify and analyze something as complex as propaganda techniques in speech. It's worth noting that every example is from a geo-political antagonist of the West. I suppose because our speech is never propogandistic?
