I read an article about this last night. Quite interesting. Seems they were wrong about some things and will have to speculate again.

This is all that it is is educated speculation. I have no problem with them speculating as long as those speculating are honest and state that it is not fact, but speculation.

Try hard not to offend. Try harder not to be offended.
Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not after you.

Thanks for the link.

This is interesting and a good example of science in progress since at this point they have only published a peer review draft and not the final paper which will no doubt undergo further editing and revision.

Here is the Journal of Nature draft article referenced by the story above: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-05786-2

Here is the actual paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586- ... erence.pdf

One thing they have done (which I haven't seen happen often) is they have published the complete peer review comments and responses by the authors. Interesting reading. It is beyond my understanding of astronomy in many cases, but it is interesting to see the degree of detail in which other scientists have poured over this work prior to publication. The peer review comments and responses are 34 pages long. It is interesting to see the back and forth between the paper's authors and the anonymous peer reviewers as they tighten up and revise their work in response to the peer review process.

yep. if only there was honesty about educated speculation AND experiments.
so much that is foisted upon the world is passed off as fact when it’s not.

honesty is needed, AND built-in provisions for when speculation and/or experiments go wrong.

Most or all of this drama, humiliation, wasted taxpayer money could be spared -
with even modest attempt at presenting balanced facts from the start.
