Not uncommon. Before seeking Anabaptism (when I only had "images" of Mennonites and Amish), I thought that Plain folk adhered to the OT. Many I know think this, too.

The old woodcutter spoke again. “It is impossible to talk with you. You always draw conclusions. Life is so vast, yet you judge all of life with one page or one word. You see only a fragment. Unless you know the whole story, how can you judge?"

And evangelical groups like MAP keep perpetrating these lies, particularly how they claim the Amish are not born again.

Not sure what MAP is, but what seems to perpetuate it around here is just evangelical "small talk". Anytime a verse mentions the Law or something related, I'll often hear a comment that goes like this- "There are some Christians who think they still have to live by the Law, but we know that we live only by faith".

Just the other day, a woman mentioned how much she admired the Amish and she wishes she could be like them (too many bonnet novels?), but she "just wishes they followed Jesus more and didn't have so many regulations".

But we can be guilty of the same thing. I have seen this in every denomination, definitely including Mennonites across the spectrum.

In fact, some people are almost in the habit of proving every point by imagining someone who disagrees with them and telling you how bad that person is. We all know that Jesus wants us to eat apples - after all, those people who eat oranges are sinners and hypocrites ... long diatribe follows ... at the end of it, I still don't know why they think Jesus wants me to eat apples, but I know they don't want me to ask that question.

If you can't make your point without that, you probably can't make your point.

J.M.
The MAP Josh is referring to is:

http://www.mapministry.org/

Started by a man who grew up in the Amish faith-
BUT- to be fair- there are Swartzentrubers that DO indeed apply some Mosaic laws (like how the men are to cut their hair & not round their beards) to themselves- and I remember when we were supporters of MAP, an Amish man joined our discussion forum and was applying Sabbath day laws to Sunday- and was worried about his horse not resting on Sunday, when taking them by buggy to Church- he was sincerely concerned he was breaking the Sabbath with his horse- many people are aware of these types of things in 'some' of the Amish sects.
(Actually MAP is the first "Discussion Forum" i was ever on (where I met "Joy" who is on this forum) & over time, I found myself disagreeing with some of MAP's theology, more inclined towards Anabaptism, and was led here (or MD) because of that leaning & being a seeker to Anabaptism many years ago)

Josh, MAP has backed down from claiming ALL Amish are not born again. I do have friends who left OO Amish, became Mennonite- but they too- claim there are many Amish who are not born again but simply grow up in it, get baptized without really understanding (but do want to marry & remain in community, which requires baptism) and so just to clarify I know Amish & formers who also claim that there are many Amish who are not born again. Plus I've met Mennonites in Holmes who believe they need to share the 'true Gospel' with Amish- It can be confusing to us outsiders- these same people will attest to Amish they believe ARE born again. Kind of like Jews- not by 'ethnicity' but by faith.

Lester, are you sure you got them all? Are you sure you didn't list any twice? Are you sure you didn't make up some of them? Are you sure you have time for this?

Really!

I wonder if that's partly because Orthodox Jews and Amish both wear dark colors, broad-brimmed hats, and beards?

Maybe someone thinks both are trying to obey the Old Testament?
