Re: Thanksgiving

I love thanksgiving. We are grateful to God. There's not a lot of commercialism. Family comes together. Some years we are scattered, I like those years less ...

Christmas has become so commercial. Even Easter is getting polluted. Thanksgiving is still relatively pure.

Re: Word of the year: post-truth

You know, when I'm not on MN, I don't usually think in terms of liberals versus conservatives. I think about what the problems are with education, what things have been tried, what seems to have worked, the ways that civil discourse is breaking down, what it would take to get people talking with eac...

Re: Word of the year: post-truth

Conservatives and liberals can both be post-truth. For what it's worth, I think conservatives and liberals can both be authoritarian, too. It's a lot easier to think clearly about these issues if you treat them separately. You've got to admit this is a bigger problem for liberals in our culture rig...

Re: Education

Boot, some cities this is happening in are York, Reading, Baltimore, and New York City - and probably more I don't know about. Frankly, any family willing to move reasonably close to a plain area (which includes many cities) can avail themselves of an amazing - and nearly free - education. One scho...

Re: Peacemaking after the Election

To give an idea of how bad the fake news problem is, a conservative oriented person informed me Saturday that "the military aren't allowed to have Bibles anymore". Another person nodded in agreement. It is complete fiction. Over on the left, people think all Muslims are going to be requir...

Re: Word of the year: post-truth

I like the word "Drama-Queenery" myself. I only just discovered it, but I'm looking forward to using it: "Alright, enough of this drama queenery let's just solve the problem and get on with the job." Brilliant and useful...I'll start test driving it out here in MN immediately (a...

Re: Education

Around here private schools are minimal. And some of them are notoriously bad, and the good ones are notoriously expensive (and Catholic...). Generally, where I'm at, the public schools are held in higher regard. That's not to say we don't have some had school districts. If a parents wants children...

Re: Education

Something some Mennonites do is set up schools both for their own members and for the community too. In addition to a great education there is an opportunity for spiritual formation. Some of the kids join the church when they grow up, and often fit into the church very well and marry someone also i...

Re: Dr Ben Carson - Post 2016 Election

you are welcome to ignore this thread. :) I would rather not ignore the culture wars when people bring them here. I would rather not ignore turning political figures into heroes and demons and conflating good versus evil with political factions and parties. Frankly, I'd rather not spend time and ef...
